The Maias: Story of a Portuguese Family Movie Showing & Discussion

Description: All are invited to the showing of "The Maias," a movie by Joao Botelho (2014), based on the 19th-century novel by Eca de Queiros with the same title. This is a Portuguese movie with English subtitles. Movie is preceded by a short lecture by Prof. Frank Sousa (UMass Lowell) entitled "Eca de Queiros's "The Maias" in 1888 and 2016." Main actor Graciano Dias (playing Carlos da Maia) will be available for discussion and Q&A after the movie. This event is free and open to the public (please use parking lot 13, at UMD). Event by the PhD in Portuguese Program at UMD, with the kind collaboration and sponsorship of the Department of Portuguese (UMD), the Department of Art History (UMD), the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives (UMD), Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture (UMD), the Consulate of Portugal in New Bedford and Camoes Instituto da Cooperacao e da Lingua (Boston).
