Description: A Talk by Harleen Singh, Associate Professor, English and Women's and Gender Studies, Brandeis University

In 1857, the Queen of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmi Bai, led a rebellion against the East India Company. She died in combat but she went on to become a legendary figure in Indian and British history. Variously represented in British Victorian novels and in Hindi literature, film, and poetry, Rani Lakshmi Bai is both a personage of revilement and admiration. Professor Singh's book, The Rani of Jhansi: Gender, History, and Fable, is the study of a complicated historical and literary tradition that refracts the Rani's story through varying agendas of racial supremacy, sexual stereotyping, linguistic and religious singularity, and caste and class politics. In this talk, Professor Singh will present some of her work as an exploration of power and authority in India's literature and history.
