Workshop: Techniques for Active Learning in the Classroom

When: Tuesday, April 19, 2016
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
Where: CCB 115
Description: By Chris Brigham, Vijaya Chalvendra

Sometimes, a student can lose focus even during the best lectures. Using techniques that promote student engagement can help keep the focus on the lecture topic. I have instituted a number of techniques in my classes. Promoting discussion both with other students and you the instructor can promote active and attentive learning. Also, giving students the opportunity for feedback every class can help the instructor respond and clarify points that were unclear, as well as help the instructor to alter the lesson in real time. There are also several ways technology can be used for a more engaged classroom. I use these techniques in my Bioengineering classes, but I believe these can be adapted for any discipline. In my experience, promoting discussion, giving the opportunity for feedback, and going beyond the 50-minute or 75-minute lecture has been rewarding for both me and the students.
Some of the techniques to be discussed: think/pair/share, minute paper, app-based clickers, flipped classroom.
