Description: Topic: Capturing Provenance in Interactive Web Visualization

Abstract
With the increasing number of interactive visualization on Web, it becomes possible for the users to create new views of data and generate insight from them. However, such views are often transient, lost when the user moves to a new web page. This project creates a JavaScript library for capturing provenance the steps involved in generating a result for these visualizations. It automatically tracks the user interactions in visualizations created using dc.js (https://dc-js.github.io/dc.js/).

In data visualization, D3 is one of the most popular libraries, and allow the designers to generate visualization on the web without any plugins. D3 provides a high degree of customization and allows the developer to manipulate the coordinate system, draw individual shapes, and respond to user command, but it is not high level charting library. DC.js builds on D3 and provides predefined chart types and leverages CrossFilter to link interactions across charts using filters.

This project creates a new JavaScript library that works with dc.js to capture provenance, record thumbnails, and return to previous states. All this data is saved into an XML file for storing provenance and displayed to the user in a list. In the list view, users can see thumbnails of past views and, details for each record, and the order they were generated. In addition, users can choose to return to a past version and further explore the visualizations.
