7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Where: > See description for location
Description: UMassD NAACP Chapter, the Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center, and the A. Philip Randolph Institute Eastern MA present, "Black Labor Leadership from the Past to the Present" on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 7PM in the Blue and Gold Room of the Campus Center.

Join Elce Redmond, an organizer with the with the Bakery and Confectionery Workers International Union of America, as he shares stories about his grandfather who organized alongside A. Philip Randolph, his father's work as a Teamster, and his current role as an union organizer. A. Philip Randolph was leader in the Civil Rights Movement, the American labor movement, and socialist political party. A. Philip Randolph organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first predominantly African-American labor union.
Elce will also discuss forging Black/Brown unity in the face of job loss in Chicago, particularly with efforts to save 600 jobs from being sent to Mexico. He will highlight how his union is striving to focus on the corporate decisions that can divide workers and that could pit workers against each other, if we aren't intentionally about building strong solidarity. Come with your questions about this campaign, what it is like to be a union organizer and about the importance of Black labor leaders in building the labor movement.

600 Nabisco workers who make Oreo Cookies lost their jobs in Chicago last year when Nabisco put profits before workers. Learn about their fight back against corporate greed, outsourcing, and the global exploitation of working people. Speak with a laid off Nabisco worker regarding how the events unfolded in Chicago, how they and their families have been personally affected, how the fight back has grown nationally and globally, and how you can get involved!
