Description: TOPIC: DETECTION OF EMPTY SPACES IN A PARKING LOT

LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A

ABSTRACT:
The objective of this project is to detect empty spaces in a parking lot by using advanced digital image processing techniques. Instead of using traditional sensors, in this project, I developed a software application, which greatly reduces the establishing and maintenance cost of the detection. I investigated an image processing approach to detect the empty space regions, which includes edge detection and morphological operators. The edge detection is designed for recognizing the empty space by identifying the points in digital images at which the image brightness changes sharply; the morphological operators are used to identify the recognized empty spaces. The experiment results in the project show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed detection techniques. The techniques in the project could be applied for other potential applications such as geographical mapping and parking arrangements.
