Dissertation Title:
ONDE QUERES CANCIONISTA SOU POETA: THE SINGULAR CASE OF CAETANO VELOSO
Advisor:
Dr. Dario Borim
Readers:
Dr. Glaucia Silva and Dr. Christopher Larkosh
Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to highlight how the intellectual, artistic and eclectic figure of Caetano Veloso occupies a unique position in the middle of the controversial discussions about the relationship of the popular song with the poetry of the literary series in the scenario of Brazilian culture. It seeks to investigate what the poet-composer conjectures in his project of songs and essays on subjects essential to the interpretation of Brazil while evidencing his intervention mainly in the world of Letters. Also, starting from authors who travel through the fields of popular music and literary poetry--but not limited to them--this interdisciplinary research uses historiographical data to situate Caetano Veloso in the continuum of the history of Brazilian popular song. It presents and discusses some models of analysis of song in order to contribute to the deepening of the query song-poetry and to foster a dialogue that is already evident, necessary and urgent about his unique position as a Brazilian poet.
