Description: TO: Faculty and Students
FROM: Dr. Sivappa Rasapalli
SUBJECT: CHM PhD Thesis Presentation (UMD-UML joint PhD Program)
BY: Menglong Yu
TOPIC: Design and development of facile synthetic access to medicinally important heterocyclic and macrocyclic compounds
DATE: November 17th, 2015
TIME: 1:30 PM
PLACE: UMD Library 240 (screened at Olney 518 UML campus)

ABSTRACT: One of the initial steps in the development of therapeutic agents is the identification of lead compounds that bind to the drug target of interest. Nature provides us with many complex natural products that possess interesting biomedicinal properties. Unfortunately, these sought-after materials are usually isolated in low quantities, making their development into useful medicines difficult. The overarching theme of this thesis work is to design and develop facile synthetic access to such biologically important complex heterocyclic and macrocyclic natural and unnatural products. Our synthetic studies towards saxitoxin and its analogues for neuro-medicinal applications, development of strategies for assembling oxacyclic ansamycins for identification of novel anti-biotic leads, and benzylidine heterocycles for photophormcological applications will be presented.

NOTE: All the CHM Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
