2018 Unity Fest Call for Student, Organanizational, and Departmental Involvement

When: Friday, April 20, 2018
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: > See description for location
Description: The 2018 Unity Fest is scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2018 from 3pm-6pm on the Campus Center Quad.

There are several ways for the campus community to be involved and participate.

Student and Organizational Involvement

We are still looking for individual students and student groups to participate by showcasing their culture. In previous years, student organizations have tabled but this year we want students and organizations to showcase their cultures by hosting interactive. Individual students and organizations can develop fun and interactive ways to engage attendees by hosting cultural games, activities, and others.

For instance, we are looking for groups to host games and activities such as Dominoes, Henna, Mancala, Jumbo Jenga, Ludo, Uno, Carrom (Indian tabletop game), Spades, Spoons, Chess, Checkers and various others.

Unity Stage Performances via Collaborations

While all performance groups are more than welcome to participate in the Unity Fest, this year we are encouraging collaborative performances among groups; thus, vocal performances, spoken word artists/poets and dance individual/teams are asked to collaborate to create a unified performance.

If your organization would like to perform a separate piece, you will have the opportunity to do so in the "yard" (on the outside patio) but not on the main stage. Please let us know if this is something you like to do.

Again, we encourage collaborations between organizations, but it is not required.

Departmental/Office Involvement

There are several UMassD Departments and Offices represented on the planning committee and those not involved are encouraged to participate by showcasing a particular aspect of their respective areas that represents commUNITY.

Decoration and Beautifications

Individuals and groups are welcome to submit pictures of cultural artifacts and items that represent their cultures to have them displayed in the following areas during the Unity Fest:
Living Room (this is where there will be artifacts that represent living rooms from different cultures). For example, one committee member identifies as Colombian and would like to include a picture of a large straw hat embroidered with the Colombian flag that currently decorates her own living room.
Kitchen (this is where there will be items that represent cultural foods and kitchen utensils). For example, a mortar and pestle or a bamboo plantain press.
Family Room (this is where cultural games will be played). For example, dominoes, spades, checkers, etc.

Again, we welcome all participants and look forward to hearing from you by Friday, March 30, 2018 at 5:00pm. For more information please contact the Frederick Douglass Unity House.
