Description: Weaving together an historical analysis and ethnographic sketches of contemporary life, this talk explores the role of language in the formation of Cape Verdean national identity and the complexities of building a national language from an oral Creole that is rooted in a slavery-based colonial past.
MÃrcia Rego is a Cultural Anthropologist and Associate Professor of the Practice at Duke University. She is the author of The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde: Slavery, Language and Ideology, by Lexington Books.
