Description: Joint MNE-MATH-CEN-EAS SEMINAR

DATE:
October 30, 2020

TIME:
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

LOCATION: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/97680493591 (Passcode: 500)

SPEAKER:
Dr. Johann Guilleminot, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Duke University

TOPIC:
Uncertainty Quantification on Complex Geometries

ABSTRACT:
In this talk, we propose a stochastic computational framework to perform uncertainty quantification on complex domains. The development of probabilistic models for spatially dependent coefficients in stochastic operators is first addressed. Computational issues related to sampling on such geometries are subsequently discussed. The proposed framework is finally illustrated through various examples, including (1) multiscale simulations on composites with random microstructures, (2) nonlinear simulations on patient-specific human arteries, and (3) phase-field simulations for brittle fracture based on real physical experiments.

BIO:
Johann Guilleminot joined Duke in July 2017, and is an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering (with secondary appointment in the department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science). Prior to that, he held a Maitre de Conferences position in the Multiscale Modeling and Simulation Laboratory at Universite© Paris-Est in France.
He earned an MS (2005) in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from Institut Mines Lille, and an MS (2005) and PhD (2008) in Theoretical Mechanics from the University of Science and Technology in Lille (France). He received his Habilitation (2014) in Mechanics from Universite Paris-Est, with certifications in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.
Dr. Guilleminot's research focuses on uncertainty quantification, computational mechanics and materials science, as well as on topics at the interface between these fields. He received various awards, including student awards (Best MS Thesis, Best PhD Thesis), the French Early Career Award (2012), and the NSF CAREER Award (2020).
