ABSTRACT: “American lobsters are typically associated with “complex” rocky substrate, however, they are also found on “featureless” sand/mud substrates. A lobster’s ability to utilize featureless substrates increases with size and may also be related with an individual’s competitive abilities. Sampling gear used to conduct lobster surveys may bias results and limit the ability to document population characteristics due to limitations related to; gear selectivity, habitat type (depth and substrate), and the spatial extent of a survey. We utilized a fishery-independent ventless lobster trap survey, stratified by depth and substrate type, to survey lobsters over a broad area in Massachusetts Bay. The survey was conducted in cooperation with commercial lobster fishers at 77 sampling stations for two years. This is the first large scale field study to document how physical characteristics of individuals determine their resource holding potential and influence their spatial distribution by habitat type. The non-random distribution of lobsters by size, sex, reproductive status, shell hardness, and cull status, has tremendous implications on the interpretation of population survey indices, as well as on survey design.”
