Abstract: River herring (collectively alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and blueback herring Alosa aestivalis), influence ecosystem and nutrient dynamics through predation on zooplankton and by a suite of piscivorous species. Impacts of alewife on freshwater lakes have demonstrated that these effects can cascade through the ecosystem, in particular by shaping zooplankton communities. However, anadromous river herring populations have undergone long-term declines, interfering with these processes at landscape scales. Freshwater productivity and ocean processes remain poorly understood, and this inhibits identifying the correct prescriptions towards recovery. From a scientific perspective, a large list of data gaps exists around which for form research projects. I will describe a series of multiple lake surveys, paired (alewife present/absent) lake and laboratory experiments, and modeling efforts that attempt to fill these gaps. This presentation will cover the historical declines of anadromous populations, the ecosystem consequences of the declines, and then will shift to understanding current and future threats brought on by climate change and other factors. Along the way I will attempt to shed light on data gaps we are filling as we move towards a more complete view of river herring life histories and their role in coastal environments.
