Abstract: Marine communities in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean have strong seasonality, and the Gulf of Maine (GOM) supports a range of highly migratory species that coincide the timing of recurring life events with preferred conditions and peaks in forage. The timing and intensity of seasonal warming and cooling cycles have undergone significant shifts and are associated with regional oceanographic and atmospheric patterns. This talk will explore and contrast phenological responses to climate drivers across functional groups through three case studies in the GOM: 1) spring spawning migration of anadromous alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), 2) patterns in habitat use of North Atlantic right (Eubalaena glacialis) whales, and 3) spring-summer foraging conditions and productivity of nesting seabirds (Sterna sp.). Overall phenological responses vary among species in strength, directionality, and spatial coherence as well as in relationship to different seasonal environmental drivers. This study provides new information on how higher trophic level species are responding to climate change through annual and seasonal variability, and considers the ecological and management implications in terms of resource mismatches and interactions with human activities.
