"Integrating spatial ecology with non-lethal reproductive techniques for the conservation and management of sharks"

Professor James Sulikowski
University of New England

Wednesday, March 6, 2019
2:30 pm to 3:30 pm
SMAST East Rooms 101/102
836 S. Rodney French Blvd, New Bedford

Abstract:
Understanding movement patterns at multiple spatial and temporal scales as well as obtaining information on reproductive biology helps create successful fisheries management plans, especially for highly migratory and/or commercially harvested species. However, reproductive information is often taken by lethal sampling, an approach that hinders the collection of spatial and reproductive data simultaneously over extended periods of time. Using examples from various species, this presentation will summarize our multifaceted approach linking satellite tag technology with non-lethal reproductive techniques to provide recommendations for gear configurations and evaluate hotspots of bycatch vulnerability at different life history stages.

About Professor Sulikowski:
Professor Sulikowski has masters’ degrees in marine biology and physiology as well as a PhD in Zoology. His 25 years of experience using a variety of techniques, including hormone analyses, electronic tracking, and ultrasound imaging, has resulted in 82 peer-reviewed publications and over 13 million dollars in external grant funding. His work has been featured on such media outlets as the BBC series "Rise of Animals" hosted by David Attenborough, the "ocean mysteries series" hosted by Jeff Corwin, Discovery Channel’s Shark week, as well as many other local, regional and national affiliates. Dr. Sulikowski and his laboratory of undergraduate and graduate students at the University of New England are dedicated to advancing our knowledge and conservation of sharks.
