Carney Library, Office of Faculty Development Contact: Office of Faculty Development Description: Using Audio Feedback to Engage Student Learning Two-Part Workshop: Tuesday, April 4, 2:00-2:30 (via Zoom) Monday, April 10, 1:00-2:00 p.m. (in person, LIB 213, or via Zoom) Join us for two successive sessions on implementing audio feedback into your teaching and assessment practices. We'll explore some practical "how-to's" and also discuss how audio feedback can both enrich student learning and make grading more efficient (and even enjoyable!). Session one will be a 30-minute offering via Zoom on Tuesday, April 4th, 2:00-2:30. This session will introduce the screen-capture tool Kaltura, which can be used to record audio and visual feedback and then placed directly into the myCourses inline grader. Participants will be encouraged to try using Kaltura before attending the second session. Session two will be a 1-hour hybrid offering on Monday, April 10th from 1:00-2:00 where we will discuss how instructors used Kaltura following the first session. This session will also offer an opportunity to dive deeper into the use of audio and video tools for online teaching, highlighting how it can provide opportunities for efficient grading, in-depth and personalized feedback, as well as improving accessibility. Participants are welcome to register for either session, but we recommend participating in both to maximize the objectives of the workshop. Michael Pickett will then describe the Secret Service Critical Systems Protection Program and how it relates to the NIST Risk Management Framework. The presentation will end with a question and answer session to discuss all matters related to the U.S. Secret Service and the protection of cyber-physical systems. Biography: Michael Pickett has served in the Federal Government for over thirty years, twenty of which has been in the U.S. Secret Service. He is currently assigned to the Digital Evidence Forensic Lab of the New England Cyber Fraud Task Force, which is responsible for working with Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies to investigate violations of Federal and State law in regards to bank fraud, credit card fraud, identity theft and electronic crimes, as well as provide computer forensics support to investigations. From 2013 to June of 2019, he was assigned to the Technical Security Division, Technical Surveillance Countermeasures branch in Washington DC. Michael joined the Secret Service's Electronic Crime Special Agent, Network Intrusion Responder Program in 2005 and the Computer Forensics Program in 2007. 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM	The Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Weekly Seminar Announcement - Juan Gutierrez Bravo Location: > See description for location Contact: > See Description for contact information Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement “Distribution of larval fish in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone” Juan Gutierrez Bravo Graduate Student SMAST at UMassD Wednesday, April 12, 2023 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 And via Zoom Abstract: The three-dimensional distribution of fish larvae and juveniles, in relation to environmental structure and dissolved oxygen gradients, was analyzed from eight key locations in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ). The oxic layer depth (>100 umol kg-1) was <50 m in the Costa Rica Dome, ~80 m in the warm pool off Guatemala and Mexico, and ~120 m in two anticyclonic eddies crossed during sampling. The upper-lower boundaries of the OMZ anoxic core (<2 umol kg-1) expanded from 350-500 m off Costa Rica to 100-750 m off central Mexico, displacing the hypoxic layer (10-100 umol kg-1). Larval fish stages were distinctly distributed. Preflexion and flexion stages were restricted to the oxic layer. Postflexion and transformation stages were abundant in the oxic layer but also present in deeper layers, including the anoxic core. Juveniles of meso-bathypelagic species were present along the water column but most abundant below the anoxic core, showing a physiological capacity to cross anoxic waters. Dominant species distribution shows that epipelagic species are restricted to the oxic layer through their development, while meso-bathypelagic species like Diogenichthys laternatus and Cyclothone spp. cross the core to deep hypoxic waters as transformation larvae and juveniles. Thus, expanding OMZs could further restrict the habitat of epipelagic species, while also affecting the displacement of meso-bathypelagic species. The sanitary classification of shellfish growing waters is the primary focus of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries Shellfish Program. A critical aspect of the NSSP is the sanitary classification of waters adjacent to wastewater treatment plants. These closed safety zones classified as Prohibited to shellfishing are required around major point-source outfalls. Typically, those zones have been set using simple dilution calculations, or when available, hydrographic dye studies have been employed. The utilization of a model to establish closed safety zone limits promises to protect public health with more extensive geographic coverage, using a wider range of environmental data while expediting the process coast wide. Bio: Jeff Kennedy has been the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) Shellfish Sanitation, Management and Technical Assistance Program Manager since 2020 and previously the North Shore Shellfish Regional Supervisor and Shellfish Purification Plant Manager. Although it is convenient to have training done through software as opposed to on a hardware build, there are several drawbacks to this approach. The primary cost of this convenience is the amount of time it takes to train an ANN. Emulated training methods are slower than real-time on-chip training, with the amount of training time increasing with the complexity of the ANN. When training in real-time each neuron can be trained at once, taking advantage of the inherent parallelism of ANNs, and decreasing training times markedly. This thesis includes a discussion of an analog hardware implementation for training neural networks, and an evaluation and design explanation of an ANN which has been built on physical hardware as a proof-of-concept. The ANN is designed to perform pattern recognition on handwritten digits from zero to nine and uses the MNIST data set as a source for the figures used in training. The â€œoutput-layerâ€ section of this ANN, where all of the training is completed, is built entirely in analog hardware in order to prove the potential advantages over training in software. Another is the case of formation flight used by groups of pelicans to minimize the energy required for flying (per pelican) compared to flying solo. In this talk, I will explore the effect of complex geometries and arrangements of solid boundaries on the flow field. First, I will focus on shark-inspired two-dimensional, symmetric, and periodic textures of various cross-sectional shapes (commonly known as riblets) which are placed aligned with the direction of the flow. Second, I will explore the effect of using arrangements of objects in the flow inspired by formation flight in pelicans and the interactions between flow past various members. I will describe the results of our custom-designed experiments using a combination of Taylor-Couette flows in Couette flow and Taylor-Vortex regimes and high Reynolds number laminar boundary layer flows in a water tunnel. I will discuss how each of these complex geometries and arrangements can be used to tune the flow field around the boundaries in terms of frictional loading, and flow instabilities. BIO: Shabnam Raayai is a Rowland Fellow and principal investigator at Rowland Institute at Harvard University where her lab is focused on the study of problems of fluid-solid interaction involving textures and complex geometries. Prior to her current role, she was a postdoctoral associate at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. She received her SM and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and has won multiple awards including the outstanding teaching assistant award from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT and the Andreas Acrivos Dissertation Award in fluid dynamics from the American Physical Society. SMAST East Room 101 (By Zoom; In person at Univ of Sao Paulo) Abstract: This doctoral dissertation discusses the basic dynamics of the mesoscale cyclonic quasi-stationary meanders of the Brazil Current and their impact on plankton distribution off SE Brazil. The wind-driven coastal upwelling systems in the region promote intrusions of nutrient-rich waters onto the continental shelf, supported by coastal divergence induced by the meanders. We perform experiments in a 1.5-layer quasi-geostrophic (QG) model based on contour dynamics coupled to a Nutrients-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton (NPZ) model. The results suggest that mesoscale activity impacts the planktonic populations off SE Brazil. \textit{In situ} observations of these phenomena are scarce. We present an unprecedented sampling effort that revealed submesoscale processes in a meander's rim. We show the biota responds to different dynamic regimes in distinct parts of the feature. Inspired by the observations, we choose to build a hierarchy of idealized models coupled to an NPZ model to investigate physical-biological interactions at mesoscale and submesoscale. We use a 2-layer QG model also based on contour dynamics, showing the meanders' stationarity is due to the almost pure baroclinic nature of this system. The lateral stirring transports enriched waters offshore, impacting the NPZ fields in addition to the eddy-induced upwelling. Then, a continuously stratified model is used to investigate submesoscale dynamics. The results suggest that submesoscale processes increase the heterogeneity in the NPZ distribution, with preferred areas for enhanced biological activity shifting from the eddy center in a 10 km resolution experiment to the eddy rim in a 1 km resolution experiment.
