  • Description: The Exhibition "Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines" at UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents three very different, yet highly compatible women artists. While each of them uses strong, intense colors and the layering of various elements and lines, each artist's work is best described by one of the three words in the exhibition title. However, the almost psychedelic interpretation of colors in Friese's landscapes, the inclusion of photography or other unusual materials in Mandle's critical narratives and the underlying geometry and references to female imagery in Thorton's flowers all share an affinity towards abstraction while inspiring visitors to look closer to discover their inner logic.

  • Description: College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) presents a new site-specific installation by recent MFA graduate Kat Knutsen, entitled "Formidable" through November 12, 2015. After receiving her MFA in painting at UMass Dartmouth in 2014, Kat Knutsen (born 1984) began an artist residency at CVPA's Star Store Campus focusing on combining fiber arts and painting in her animations. Her work has since evolved towards installations that combine fiber art, painting, sculpture and music. As she says, "I keep an open mind with the materials I work with and explore the relationships between them. At the moment, my work is a conversation between the two-dimensional, three-dimensional and sound. 'Formidable' is a culmination of my experiences since I arrived in New Bedford in 2012. For me, the object of the jellyfish symbolizes the need to quickly adapt in the changing art world. The challenge of creating a dialogue between the textile objects, painting and music in this site-specific installation parallels my journey in building a career as a young artist today."

  • Description: In this course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for both online and blended teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching strategies for both methodologies. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention.

The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The exhibition Paper Unleashed: Materials in Art Education celebrates the most basic of materials that can be used in almost any context, educational or creative setting. This exhibition endeavors to explore the many ways in which paper can be used to create a variety of art forms while supporting corresponding teaching methodologies. The exhibition will feature an artist talk by Barbara Pagh, who has been working with handmade paper since the 1970s. She enjoys being able to control the size, color and texture of the paper, explorations that led to the creation of three-dimensional forms to be assembled into installation pieces. Ms. Pagh will discuss her inspiration for the works in paper, with an emphasis on the results of sabbatical projects where she worked to interpret megalithic sites in Scotland, Ireland and Brittany. A selection of elements from the Ireland exhibition, Passages will be on view. The artist talk will take place during the reception on Thursday October 29, 2015 at 5 pm. The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The Art Education program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The Art Education program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields.   • As Others See You: Perceptions of the Body through Figurative Painting

  • Description: Professor Suzanne Schireson's great grandfather profoundly affected her work as a figurative artist. A surgeon during the infancy of plastic surgery in the 1930's, he wrote, "Nature when imperfect is often very ugly and repellent. A thing cannot be beautiful and ugly." In her talk, Professor Schireson will discuss artwork she made in response to her great grandfather's medical practice, a conversation of sorts that spans the distance of nearly a century. Professor Schireson's paintings and animations explore the inherent contradictions that underlie her great grandfather's work-- the necessity of precision vs. the risk of invention and the power to heal vs. the fostering of insecurity. As a figurative artist, Professor Schireson is fascinated by her ancestor's surgical obsession with the aesthetics of the head and body. In telling this complex story about identity and changing appearance, she will discuss her search to understand his motivations through her artwork.

  • Description: The Exhibition "Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines" at UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents three very different, yet highly compatible women artists. While each of them uses strong, intense colors and the layering of various elements and lines, each artist's work is best described by one of the three words in the exhibition title. However, the almost psychedelic interpretation of colors in Friese's landscapes, the inclusion of photography or other unusual materials in Mandle's critical narratives and the underlying geometry and references to female imagery in Thorton's flowers all share an affinity towards abstraction while inspiring visitors to look closer to discover their inner logic.

  • Description: College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) presents a new site-specific installation by recent MFA graduate Kat Knutsen, entitled "Formidable" through November 12, 2015. After receiving her MFA in painting at UMass Dartmouth in 2014, Kat Knutsen (born 1984) began an artist residency at CVPA's Star Store Campus focusing on combining fiber arts and painting in her animations. Her work has since evolved towards installations that combine fiber art, painting, sculpture and music. As she says, "I keep an open mind with the materials I work with and explore the relationships between them. At the moment, my work is a conversation between the two-dimensional, three-dimensional and sound. 'Formidable' is a culmination of my experiences since I arrived in New Bedford in 2012. For me, the object of the jellyfish symbolizes the need to quickly adapt in the changing art world. The challenge of creating a dialogue between the textile objects, painting and music in this site-specific installation parallels my journey in building a career as a young artist today."

The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The exhibition Paper Unleashed: Materials in Art Education celebrates the most basic of materials that can be used in almost any context, educational or creative setting. This exhibition endeavors to explore the many ways in which paper can be used to create a variety of art forms while supporting corresponding teaching methodologies. The exhibition will feature an artist talk by Barbara Pagh, who has been working with handmade paper since the 1970s. She enjoys being able to control the size, color and texture of the paper, explorations that led to the creation of three-dimensional forms to be assembled into installation pieces. Ms. Pagh will discuss her inspiration for the works in paper, with an emphasis on the results of sabbatical projects where she worked to interpret megalithic sites in Scotland, Ireland and Brittany. A selection of elements from the Ireland exhibition, Passages will be on view. The artist talk will take place during the reception on Thursday October 29, 2015 at 5 pm. The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The Art Education program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The Art Education program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields.   • Description: ABSTRACT: Structural biomaterials (SBs), such as animal bones and shells, are predominantly composed of weak brittle minerals, such as aragonite and opaline silica. However, they display remarkable mechanical properties, such as high strength and toughness. The SBs also possess elaborate mechanical designs that consist of intricate spatial variations of elastic properties and arrangement of weak interfaces at the micro-scale, as well as interesting geometric shapes at the macro scale. It is argued that the SB's remarkable properties arise as a consequence of their micro- and macro-scale structure. However, in most cases a clear quantitative understanding of the mechanics and the mechanisms that connect the SB's properties to their structures is missing. Such quantitative understanding, when discovered, will constitute valuable new knowledge to the field of mechanics of materials. Additionally, with the advent of digital manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing, there is a possibility that when combined with synthetic materials and chemistries, the new structure-property connections from SBs will lead to the next generation of designer materials. In the present talk we will discuss a new structure-property connection that we are investigating in the skeletal elements of the marine sponge Tethya aurantia. The skeletal elements are 1-2 mm long glass fibers known as spicules. These spicules are about 50 micrometers thick in the middle and have a characteristic tapered shape. We presume that the spicules are primarily loaded in compression inside the sponge body, and that their primary failure mode involves the spicule first undergoing a lateral buckling instability in response to the compressive loads. Through a synergistic combination of experiments, computations, and theory we will argue that the spicules’ tapered shape is very close to the shape that is optimal for withstanding the mechanical loads inside the sponge without failing. The experiments involve small-scale mechanical tests on the spicules and the theory relates to the calculus of variations problem of maximizing the lowest eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville operator. BIO: Dr. Kesari is currently an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Brown University. He started at Brown in 2013, where he is affiliated with the Solid Mechanics group. He is interested in theoretical and experimental solid mechanics problems. These problems are related to the phenomena of adhesion, fracture, and micro-mechanics in solids and involve the use of homogenization and variational methods. His research has appeared in prestigious journals, such as PNAS and was covered by news media such as Scientific American, Science Daily, and Physics World among others. Previously, he obtained his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Stanford University in 2011 and 2007, respectively, and his B.S. degree from Indian Institute of Technology, all in Mechanical Engineering. At Stanford, he was awarded the prestigious Juan Simo Outstanding Thesis award and the Herbert Kunzel Fellowship. Recently he was awarded the Haythornthwaite fellowship by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. A book signing will follow the talk, and books will be available for purchase. You may know Hedrick Smith's work from his Emmy Award winning PBS shows, his Pulitzer Prize winning work on the Pentagon Papers, or from his best selling books "The Russians" and "The Power Game." Hedrick Smith, Pulitzer Prize-winning former New York Times reporter and editor and Emmy award-winning producer/correspondent, has established himself over the past 50 years as one of America's premier journalists. His current best-seller, 'Who Stole the American Dream' is a startling and revealing portrait of the past 30 years of U.S. political and economic history, hailed both for its compelling stories and brilliant analysis. In 26 years with The New York Times, Smith served in Saigon, Cairo, Paris, the American South and as bureau chief in Moscow and Washington. In 1971, he was a member of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team for the Pentagon Papers series and in 1974, he won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting from Russia and Eastern Europe. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention.

  • Description: TOPIC: DETECTION OF EMPTY SPACES IN A PARKING LOT LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: The objective of this project is to detect empty spaces in a parking lot by using advanced digital image processing techniques. Instead of using traditional sensors, in this project, I developed a software application, which greatly reduces the establishing and maintenance cost of the detection. I investigated an image processing approach to detect the empty space regions, which includes edge detection and morphological operators. The edge detection is designed for recognizing the empty space by identifying the points in digital images at which the image brightness changes sharply; the morphological operators are used to identify the recognized empty spaces. The experiment results in the project show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed detection techniques. The techniques in the project could be applied for other potential applications such as geographical mapping and parking arrangements. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend.   • Description: The fourth annual TRED (Transformative Researchers and Educators for Democracy) Conference hosted by Ed. Leadership students at UMass Dartmouth will be on Nov. 13-14th at Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School. This year's theme is Another Education is Possible: Transforming Education through Resistance, Resilience, and Empowerment. We understand the importance of having a dialogue about the critical spaces for resistance in education among researchers, communities, youth, and educators in order to begin to work for critical transformative change both locally and globally. Chancellor Grossman will give welcoming remarks on Friday, Nov. 13th. Dr. Lilia Bartolom will be the keynote speaker on Friday and Dr. Vajra Watson will be speaking on Saturday, Nov. 14th about "The Pedagogy of Our Lives: Teaching Tools for Social Resistance within and beyond the Walls of Schools." The registration flyer and program for this year's TRED Conference are attached. You may register for the TRED Conference here. Refreshments are provided Friday evening and Saturday morning as well as lunch on Saturday. Childcare is also available on Saturday for children 3+. The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The exhibition Paper Unleashed: Materials in Art Education celebrates the most basic of materials that can be used in almost any context, educational or creative setting. This exhibition endeavors to explore the many ways in which paper can be used to create a variety of art forms while supporting corresponding teaching methodologies. The exhibition will feature an artist talk by Barbara Pagh, who has been working with handmade paper since the 1970s. She enjoys being able to control the size, color and texture of the paper, explorations that led to the creation of three-dimensional forms to be assembled into installation pieces. Ms. Pagh will discuss her inspiration for the works in paper, with an emphasis on the results of sabbatical projects where she worked to interpret megalithic sites in Scotland, Ireland and Brittany. A selection of elements from the Ireland exhibition, Passages will be on view. The artist talk will take place during the reception on Thursday October 29, 2015 at 5 pm. The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The Art Education program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The Art Education program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields.   • Description: College of Engineering Computer and Information Science Speaker: Dr. Erik Anderson Date & Time: Friday, November 13 at 3:00 PM Location: LARTS-117 Title: Planning Epilepsy Treatment Using Geodesic Targeting for Electrical Neuromodulation Abstract: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders; affecting approximately 50 million people worldwide. Approximately 30% of epileptic patients do not respond to the standard anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), with many more suffering from the side effects of these drugs. For this group of people, surgical resection of brain tissue is one of the few viable treatment options. Recent work has shown that injecting current into the head changes the resting state of groups of neurons: either inhibiting or facilitating their function. Determining the energy deposited on the cortical surface requires complex simulation and analysis. In this talk, I will discuss our efforts to automate the detection and analysis of epileptic EEG waveforms, and how accurate simulation allows these waveforms to be localized to the brain surface. The discussion will then tackle the optimization of current source configuration required to produce a desired energy characterization at the brain s urface to be used to inhibit epileptogenic brain tissue, and treat epilepsy without the use of AEDs. Bio: Erik Anderson is currently a Scientist at Electrical Geodesics, Inc (EGI). He received his PhD in Computing in 2011 from the University of Utah. During the tenure of his graduate and post-graduate studies at the Scientific Imaging Institute at the University of Utah, he focused on the challenges of multidisciplinary collaboration with a strong emphasis on psychological and psychiatric studies. Erik was recruited by EGI in 2013 for his experience in the processing and visualization of EEG data and expertise in the visualization of simulated data. His current research revolves around the analysis and visualization of electrophysiological simulations of the brain. Pastries and Beverages will be served.   • Description: The Exhibition "Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines" at UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents three very different, yet highly compatible women artists. While each of them uses strong, intense colors and the layering of various elements and lines, each artist's work is best described by one of the three words in the exhibition title. However, the almost psychedelic interpretation of colors in Friese's landscapes, the inclusion of photography or other unusual materials in Mandle's critical narratives and the underlying geometry and references to female imagery in Thorton's flowers all share an affinity towards abstraction while inspiring visitors to look closer to discover their inner logic.
