  • Description: Department of Fisheries Oceanography Environmental drivers of short-finned pilot whale distribution, habitat use and fisheries interactions in the Mid-Atlantic Bight: Implications for management Lesley Thorne, Assistant Professor School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Stony Brook University Wednesday, April 18, 2018 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm SMAST-E rm. 101/102 836 South Rodney French Boulevard, New Bedford, MA Abstract: Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) are deep-diving odontocetes that forage at depths of more than 800 m. Due to difficulties in distinguishing this species from its congener, the long-finned pilot whale (G. melas), there was limited information on the distribution and habitat use of this species in the Northwest Atlantic until recently. Short-finned pilot whales are taken as bycatch in the pelagic longline fishery, and the Northwest Atlantic stock of short-finned pilot whales is now considered to be strategic under the Marine Mammal Protection Act due to recent increases in bycatch rates. In addition, waters in the Northeast shelf of the US have shown some of the highest rates of warming in recent years, and the effects of this warming on pilot whale habitat use and distribution are unclear. An improved understanding of patterns of movement, habitat use, and behaviour of short-finned pilot whales is necessary in order to generate a full assessment of the threats faced by this species. Here we integrate data from telemetry studies, fisheries observer surveys, and stranding networks to elucidate environmental drivers of habitat use and fisheries bycatch in order to inform management and mitigation measures to decrease bycatch. • 2018 Unity Fest Call for Student, Organanizational, and Departmental Involvement
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: The 2018 Unity Fest is scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2018 from 3pm-6pm on the Campus Center Quad. There are several ways for the campus community to be involved and participate. Student and Organizational Involvement We are still looking for individual students and student groups to participate by showcasing their culture. In previous years, student organizations have tabled but this year we want students and organizations to showcase their cultures by hosting interactive. Individual students and organizations can develop fun and interactive ways to engage attendees by hosting cultural games, activities, and others. For instance, we are looking for groups to host games and activities such as Dominoes, Henna, Mancala, Jumbo Jenga, Ludo, Uno, Carrom (Indian tabletop game), Spades, Spoons, Chess, Checkers and various others. Unity Stage Performances via Collaborations While all performance groups are more than welcome to participate in the Unity Fest, this year we are encouraging collaborative performances among groups; thus, vocal performances, spoken word artists/poets and dance individual/teams are asked to collaborate to create a unified performance. If your organization would like to perform a separate piece, you will have the opportunity to do so in the "yard" (on the outside patio) but not on the main stage. Please let us know if this is something you like to do. Again, we encourage collaborations between organizations, but it is not required. Departmental/Office Involvement There are several UMassD Departments and Offices represented on the planning committee and those not involved are encouraged to participate by showcasing a particular aspect of their respective areas that represents commUNITY. Decoration and Beautifications Individuals and groups are welcome to submit pictures of cultural artifacts and items that represent their cultures to have them displayed in the following areas during the Unity Fest: Living Room (this is where there will be artifacts that represent living rooms from different cultures). For example, one committee member identifies as Colombian and would like to include a picture of a large straw hat embroidered with the Colombian flag that currently decorates her own living room. Kitchen (this is where there will be items that represent cultural foods and kitchen utensils). For example, a mortar and pestle or a bamboo plantain press. Family Room (this is where cultural games will be played). For example, dominoes, spades, checkers, etc. Again, we welcome all participants and look forward to hearing from you by Friday, March 30, 2018 at 5:00pm. • Joint MNE and EAS Seminar by Mr. Amir Pahlavan of MIT
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) and Engineering and Applied Sciences (EAS) Seminar DATE: April 20, 2018 TIME: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. LOCATION: Textile Building, Room 101E SPEAKER: Mr. Amir Pahlavan, PhD Candidate Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) TOPIC: Forced Wetting Transition and Pattern Formation in Immiscible Fluid Flows ABSTRACT: Immiscible fluid flows are ubiquitous in nature and industry, from porous media flows on km scales to micro/nanofluidic technologies. The common feature of these phenomena is the presence of contact lines, where fluids and surrounding solid meet. In the vicinity of the contact line, the bulk hydrodynamic descriptions break down and need to be augmented with the non-hydrodynamic interactions between the different phases. While the range of these interactions is limited to a few nanometers from the contact line, they can influence the flow behavior on the macroscopic length scales. In this talk, we use a combination of experiments and modeling to revisit two classical problems and show the role of contact line motion on the front instability and pattern formation. In the first part, we revisit the Taylor-Bretherton problem, i.e. fluid-fluid displacement in a smooth capillary tube. We show that the presence of a moving contact line leads to a rich flow behavior: at low displacement rates, the interface moves as a "traveling wave", but beyond a critical rate, a wetting transition occurs and a film of the defending viscous fluid is left behind on the walls. This film is unstable and starts receding from the walls, forming a growing dewetting rim, which ultimately leads to a pinch-off instability. In the second part of the talk, we revisit the Saffman-Taylor instability, i.e. fluid-fluid displacement in a Hele-Shaw cell. We show how a new mode of instability arises when contact line motion is considered. Our work sheds some light on the complexities of immiscible flows in disordered media and points to new directions of approaching this problem within the general realm of soft-matter physics. BIO: Amir Pahlavan is a PhD candidate in the Mechanical Engineering department at MIT, where his research focuses on pattern formation in immiscible flows through disordered media. He earned his MS in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied the liquid-solid interactions and slip phenomenon at the nano-scale, as well as the collective dynamics and chemotaxis in suspensions of active materials. His research focuses on understanding the emergent macroscopic behavior of soft materials from their micro/nano-scale interactions with their complex environments and using these insights to improve our predictive capabilities of engineering processes. For more information please contact Dr. Jun Li, MNE Seminar Coordinator (jun.li@umassd.edu, 508-999-8692). All are welcome and light refreshments will be served. Students taking MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! All other MNE and EAS students are encouraged to attend. • Description: Topic: Personalized Quality Prediction for Dynamic Service Management Based on Invocation Patterns Location: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 213A Abstract: In modern computing environments (e.g., cloud computing, edge computing), services might need to be selected or replaced at runtime and thus they need to be managed dynamically. For services with similar functionality, the most suitable services for a user can be selected based on an evaluation of the quality (QoS) of these services. In dynamic environments like the cloud, further personalization is also paramount. In this talk, I will present a personalized QoS prediction method, which considers impacts of the network, server environments and users input. The method analyzes previous users behavior and further extracts invocation patterns from monitored QoS data through pattern mining. The QoS is then predicted based on invocation QoS patterns and current user invocation features. Biography: Li Zhang is a faculty member in Northeastern University, Shenyang, China.
