As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention.

  • Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines
  • Location: Star Store, New Bedford , Purchase Street, New Bedford
  • Cost: Free admission
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: The Exhibition "Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines" at UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents three very different, yet highly compatible women artists. While each of them uses strong, intense colors and the layering of various elements and lines, each artist's work is best described by one of the three words in the exhibition title. However, the almost psychedelic interpretation of colors in Friese's landscapes, the inclusion of photography or other unusual materials in Mandle's critical narratives and the underlying geometry and references to female imagery in Thorton's flowers all share an affinity towards abstraction while inspiring visitors to look closer to discover their inner logic.

  • Rebellion and Femininity: The Queen of Jhansi and Colonial and Postcolonial India
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality
  • Description: A Talk by Harleen Singh, Associate Professor, English and Women's and Gender Studies, Brandeis University In 1857, the Queen of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmi Bai, led a rebellion against the East India Company. She died in combat but she went on to become a legendary figure in Indian and British history. Variously represented in British Victorian novels and in Hindi literature, film, and poetry, Rani Lakshmi Bai is both a personage of revilement and admiration. Professor Singh's book, The Rani of Jhansi: Gender, History, and Fable, is the study of a complicated historical and literary tradition that refracts the Rani's story through varying agendas of racial supremacy, sexual stereotyping, linguistic and religious singularity, and caste and class politics. In this talk, Professor Singh will present some of her work as an exploration of power and authority in India's literature and history. The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The exhibition Paper Unleashed: Materials in Art Education celebrates the most basic of materials that can be used in almost any context, educational or creative setting. This exhibition endeavors to explore the many ways in which paper can be used to create a variety of art forms while supporting corresponding teaching methodologies. The exhibition will feature an artist talk by Barbara Pagh, who has been working with handmade paper since the 1970s. She enjoys being able to control the size, color and texture of the paper, explorations that led to the creation of three-dimensional forms to be assembled into installation pieces. Ms. Pagh will discuss her inspiration for the works in paper, with an emphasis on the results of sabbatical projects where she worked to interpret megalithic sites in Scotland, Ireland and Brittany. A selection of elements from the Ireland exhibition, Passages will be on view. The artist talk will take place during the reception on Thursday October 29, 2015 at 5 pm. The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The Art Education program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The Art Education program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields. • Formidable: Site Specific Installation by Kat Knutsen
  • Location: Star Store, New Bedford , Purchase Street, New Bedford
  • Cost: Free admission.
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) presents a new site-specific installation by recent MFA graduate Kat Knutsen, entitled "Formidable" through November 12, 2015. After receiving her MFA in painting at UMass Dartmouth in 2014, Kat Knutsen (born 1984) began an artist residency at CVPA's Star Store Campus focusing on combining fiber arts and painting in her animations. Her work has since evolved towards installations that combine fiber art, painting, sculpture and music. As she says, "I keep an open mind with the materials I work with and explore the relationships between them. At the moment, my work is a conversation between the two-dimensional, three-dimensional and sound. 'Formidable' is a culmination of my experiences since I arrived in New Bedford in 2012. For me, the object of the jellyfish symbolizes the need to quickly adapt in the changing art world. The challenge of creating a dialogue between the textile objects, painting and music in this site-specific installation parallels my journey in building a career as a young artist today."

  • Department of Estuarine & Ocean Sciences Seminar

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement Tracing the fate of a very unnatural source of organic nitrogen to marine ecosystems: explosive findings Prof. Craig Tobias Department of Marine Sciences University of Connecticut Wednesday, November 4, 2015 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm SMAST I, Room 204 706 S. Rodney French Blvd., New Bedford, MA Abstract: Large quantities of surplus and damaged munitions were dumped into the ocean following WWI and WWII and the Department of Defense has documented 74 domestic and foreign dump sites. Within the contiguous 48 United States, there are approximately 41 active DOD installations located within the coastal zone. The number of active bases, combined with decommissioned facilities with historical explosives contamination, and offshore munitions dump sites indicate the probable likelihood that multiple marine habitats at multiple locations receive exposure munitions constituents. Although munitions compounds have been typically viewed from a contaminant and toxicology perspective, they are also extremely nitrogen (N) rich and represent a potential source of N to N-limited marine systems. We have been using stable isotope labelled munitions compounds to assess the ecosystem fate of two common explosives compounds; TNT and RDX. The isotope label permits the simultaneous quantification of pathways that constitute uptake and storage in macrobiota vs those that lead to complete mineralization of the compound through microbial breakdown pathways Note: Seminar will be simulcast to SMAST II, Room 325. You can view the seminar live by clicking here: "live event."Please note: the earliest you will be able to log in is 15 minutes before the regularly scheduled time.
