  • Online Teaching and Learning Strategies Training

  • Description: In this training course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for both online and blended teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching strategies for both methodologies. Throughout the training you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a training participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the training is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this training will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention. Please note: This training is offered entirely online and will be conducted over a four week time frame.

  • Description: Professor Doug Roscoe, recipient of the 2013 Provost’s Award for Innovative Use of Technology will discuss his strategy for utilizing customized online video tutorials to instruct students in the use of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software. Doug will discuss advantages, challenges and data that support the effectiveness of the strategy in PSC 349, Research Methods in Political Science. Bring your lunch, ideas, and questions for this informative session. Snacks and refreshments will be available.

  • Description: This workshop covers the use of Microsoft Word’s mail merge tools. Participants create a letter and merge it with names and addresses from a separate data document. Conditional if-then statements are covered, as well as using data from external sources such as Peoplesoft. Familiarity with the basic text-editing features of Word is required.   • Introduction to Photoshop Part 2

  • Description: The second workshop in the three part series covers the use of Photoshop’s sophisticated painting and selecting tools. Participants learn about blending modes, as well as the creation of custom brushes. The selecting tools are used to separate objects from their backgrounds to create a composite image.   • Getting Started in myCourses

  • Description: Open to faculty who are new to myCourses or faculty who are transitioning from Bb Vista (old system). This face-to-face workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the teaching and learning features of (new myCourses)Blackboard Learn. You will view the course first as a student so you will be familiar with how the course environment appears to your own students. As a student, you will learn how to access and navigate through tools and content. Next, you will learn about the roles an instructor plays in the online environment and identify key attributes for success. From there, you will learn how to set up the Course Menu, your students' access point to tools and content, and how to create Content Areas that contain materials, tools, and resources. You will have the opportunity to add a course structure to your development course, allowing you to learn about Blackboard Learn tools and features as you experience them in the course environment. Finally, you will become familiar with some common start-up tasks, such as creating announcements, adding a syllabus, adding calendar entries, and setting up discussion forums.
