  • Description: In this course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for online teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching and learning strategies for the online environment. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop your own strategies for online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMassD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing, and building the online course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to techniques that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and increase retention.   • Description: Did you know that 78% of instructors were found to have flipped at least one lesson according to a 2014 study conducted by the Flipped Learning Network and SOPHIA Learning? It was also reported that 96% of instructors who have flipped a lesson would recommend this method to other instructors.   • Description: How can we streamline and enrich group assignments using technology? Including collaboration into course work provides opportunities for knowledge sharing and reflection as well as helps to promote a sense of community among our learners. Blogs, Wikis, and Blackboard Collaborate are three tools that can be used to create collaborative learning assignments and environments. Attending this seminar will provide participants with an overview of each tool, examples of effective collaborative assignments, and strategies for incorporating each tool and collaborative work successfully into their course work. Note: Please bring one of your current group assignments with you to the seminar. There will be time towards the end of the seminar to begin the redesign of your current group assignment using the most effective digital tool for your objectives.

  • Description: Bristol County Savings Bank Freedom Festival at UMass Dartmouth July 3 (Rain Date July 5) Festival to draw thousands featuring El Caribe, Santa Mamba, Entrain and the Dartmouth Community Band The Bristol County Savings Bank Freedom Festival at UMass Dartmouth, an alcohol-free, family-oriented event featuring great music and fireworks, will be held July 3 on the athletic fields at the UMass Dartmouth Tripp Athletic Center. The festival, open to the public, is made possible by a grant from the Bristol County Savings Bank as well as contributions from the Town of Dartmouth, Not Your Average Joe's, Xerox, and Blue Spruce. Admission is free but on-campus parking will be $5 per vehicle. The location for viewing of the fireworks display has been moved from the center of campus to the athletic fields due to campus construction projects. "UMass Dartmouth is excited to join with Bristol County Savings Bank and our other partners to celebrate Independence Day with our community," UMass Dartmouth Divina Grossman said. "This is a wonderful opportunity for families from across the region to enjoy a night of music, fun, and fireworks on our campus." "Being a community bank, we are especially proud to partner with UMass Dartmouth once again this year and offer this fun, family-oriented event to the Southcoast Region," said Patrick J. Murray, President and CEO, Bristol County Savings Bank. "The Freedom Festival is always a special evening which celebrates the area's community and national spirit and the Bank is honored to do its part." The musical fun kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with Santa Mamba, followed at 6:30 p.m. by El Caribe, comprised of UMass Dartmouth students and faculty and one of the only university steel bands in the state. Entrain will take the stage at 7:10 p.m. and the 40-member Dartmouth Community Band will wrap up the music portion of the evening with patriotic and classic American songs. The fireworks will take place at 9:15 p.m. A large turnout (15-20,000 people) is expected. There will be increased security measures taken. Please limit what you bring onto campus. The campus will be open all day and guests are invited to arrive any time after 3 p.m. to find the best available parking and seating. Concession stands and vendors will also be selling a variety of foods, beverages and novelty products. Traffic, public safety and parking plans are in place through the concerted efforts of university, local and state police. Vehicular access to campus will be closed when all on-campus parking spaces are filled and no later than 9 p.m. Parking will be banned along Old Westport Road throughout the evening. Jurors: Jean-Francois Allaux, Associate Professor, UMass Dartmouth; Viera Levitt, Gallery Director, UMass Dartmouth; and Robert P. Stack, co-owner and curator, Yellow Peril Gallery, Providence, RI The gallery has a wall available for postings of materials measuring up to 8.5x11 inches. This is open to anyone who would like to contribute a work of art, a poem, and/or a letter or postcard sent from a real or imagined trip to Paris.
