Formidable: Site Specific Installation by Kat Knutsen
- Location: Star Store, New Bedford
, Purchase Street, New Bedford
- Cost: Free admission.
- Contact: University Art Gallery
- Description: College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) presents a new site-specific installation by recent MFA graduate Kat Knutsen, entitled "Formidable" through November 12, 2015.
After receiving her MFA in painting at UMass Dartmouth in 2014, Kat Knutsen (born 1984) began an artist residency at CVPA's Star Store Campus focusing on combining fiber arts and painting in her animations. Her work has since evolved towards installations that combine fiber art, painting, sculpture and music.
As she says, "I keep an open mind with the materials I work with and explore the relationships between them. At the moment, my work is a conversation between the two-dimensional, three-dimensional and sound. 'Formidable' is a culmination of my experiences since I arrived in New Bedford in 2012. For me, the object of the jellyfish symbolizes the need to quickly adapt in the changing art world. The challenge of creating a dialogue between the textile objects, painting and music in this site-specific installation parallels my journey in building a career as a young artist today."

- Description: The Exhibition "Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines" at UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents three very different, yet highly compatible women artists. While each of them uses strong, intense colors and the layering of various elements and lines, each artist's work is best described by one of the three words in the exhibition title. However, the almost psychedelic interpretation of colors in Friese's landscapes, the inclusion of photography or other unusual materials in Mandle's critical narratives and the underlying geometry and references to female imagery in Thorton's flowers all share an affinity towards abstraction while inspiring visitors to look closer to discover their inner logic.

ECE Seminar* Speaker: Dr. Vicky Ikonomidou, George Mason University
- Location: Science & Engineering Building, Lester W. Cory Conference Room: Room 213A
- Cost: free

- Description: Topic: STRESS DETECTION USING VIDEO ANALYTICS
Location: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A
Abstract:
Despite the importance of stress in our life, both as a health hazard and as a deterrent to everyday life quality, our ability to identify its onset in a close to real-time and non-obtrusive manner is limited. In this work, we are aiming at the development of a contactless system, based on a plain video camera, that can detect the introduction of stressors in an interview setting. Our approach is based on a combination of four different steps: (a) the design of a methodology to remotely detect the heart beat signal and extract the interbeat intervals, (b) development of algorithms to reliably extract information about the differential pulse transit time, defined as the difference between the time of arrival of the blood pulse wave in two distal body locations, (c) the development of robust and sensitive heart rate variability measures that can detect the presence of minor mental stress and (d) the design of change point detection algorithms that can identify the time points corresponding to stationarity changes in the underlying body response signal. Our initial results show that it is possible to detect mental stress in a non-contact manner, suggesting that the development of a remote, covert stress detection system is feasible.
Biography:
Vicky Ikonomidou earned the Diploma in Engineering (MSc) degree and the PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1997 and 2002 respectively. Her PhD thesis focused on the development of excitation techniques for magnetic resonance tagging. In May 2003 she joined the intramural program of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the NIH (Bethesda, MD), as a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory for Functional and Molecular Imaging, Advanced MRI Section, working under Dr. Jeff Duyn in the development of high-contrast anatomical MRI techniques. In May 2006, she joined the Neuroimmunology Branch of NINDS, where she worked on brain imaging, using MRI and PET, in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Since August 2009, she has been with George Mason University, where she is an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering, and the MRI Physicist of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. Her research interests are in the fields of video analytics for stress detection and image processing for MRI for patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Ikonomidou has co-authored 22 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and is a member of ISMRM and IEEE.
The Seminars is open to the public free of charge.
