  • Workshop: Teaching Undergraduate Students to Understand Published Research
  • Location: Claire T. Carney Library, Room 314
  • Contact: Office of Faculty Development
  • Description: Trina Kershaw, Psychology Comprehension and analysis of published research are important skills to develop because they teach students about the processes and products of science. While many undergraduate courses in Psychology include published research articles as readings, students are frequently assigned to just summarize the articles. Students often make comprehension mistakes when summarizing because research articles are written for an expert audience. In this talk, I will describe an instructional scaffold I have developed to assist students in their understanding of the structure and content of empirical research articles. I will explain how this instructional scaffold has been implemented in my Psychology courses and describe learning outcomes that have been assessed with a research article comprehension measure that is separate from course assignments. I will present data showing improvement in comprehension in my courses, in contrast to control courses who completed the same assessments but who did not receive the instructional scaffold. In addition, I will show how the improvement in comprehension transfers to other skills, such as writing summaries and critiquing research articles. Finally, I will describe how this scaffold and assessment can be modified for introductory courses in Psychology and other courses that include empirical readings.

  • Mechanical Engineering (MNE) Seminar by Dr. Shuai Shao
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Mechanical Engineering (MNE) Seminar Tuesday, March 29th 2016 2:30 p.m. 3:30 p.m. Textile Building, Room 101E SPEAKER: Dr. Shuai Shao, Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS), Mississippi State University TOPIC: Multiscale Modeling of Ultrafine-Scaled Materials --- Bottom-Up Interface Engineering ABSTRACT: Future advancements in energy technologies demand novel materials that tolerate extreme environments that exceed the capability of even the most advanced materials to date. For centuries, improvements in structural materials are largely based on enhancing the microstructures and properties of the constituents. In the recent years, with the discovery of various classes of ultrafine-scaled (UFS) materials (such as nano-multilayered composites, nano-crystalline materials, nano-twinned materials), materials science is entering a revolutionary era. Now, specific properties of the UFS materials can be attained through interface engineering, where the architecture/structure of the interfaces are carefully controlled. Interfaces are important in materials of any microstructural size scale, because they can act as sources, sinks, barriers, and storage sites for defects - including dislocations, which are the main carrier of plastic deformation. In nanostructured materials, interfaces dominate material's mechanical response and can engender properties superior to those of their coarse-grained counterparts. However, the interface engineering of the UFS materials is hindered by the lack of an accurate, efficient materials model that incorporates the important role of the interfaces. The conventional materials models follow the constituent-dominated paradigm and are unable to capture the physics of unit mechanisms at interfaces. Among the modern models, atomistic modeling can elucidate the unit processes occurring within/at/across interfaces but cannot predict macroscopic properties. Dislocation Dynamics (DD) models have the unique advantage of exploring the dislocation activity in single crystal, but typically do not incorporate the role of interfaces in mechanical deformation. Therefore, to achieve efficient interface engineering, my research takes a bottom-up multiscale approach which combines the advantages of the atomistic modeling and DD models. The focuses are: (1) to understand the interface's structures and the role of interface in material's deformation using atomic-scale study; (2) to develop a multiscale materials modeling tool by advancing the current DD models and incorporating interface physics characterized at atomic scale to predict mechanical performance of materials at meso-scale. BIO: Shuai Shao is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS), Mississippi State University. His main research interest is the multiscale modeling of ultra-fine scaled materials and additively manufactured materials. Dr. Shao received his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University in May 2012. His thesis focused on the atomistic studies of deformation mechanisms in nanoscale multilayered metallic composites. After graduation, he continued to work at WSU on the statistical quantification of plastic deformation in small volumes. He joined the Materials Science and Technology Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory in November 2012. In February 2016, he joined CAVS. He has authored/co-authored over 23 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has given 20 invited/regular presentations. For more information please contact Dr. Mehdi Raessi, MNE Seminar Coordinator (mraessi@umassd.edu, 508-999-8496). All are welcome and light refreshments will be served. NOTE that students in MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! All other MNE students are encouraged to attend (especially MNE seniors and MS students).

  • Description: Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) and Engineering Applied Science (EAS) Seminar Friday, April 1st 2016 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. LOCATION: Textile Building, Room 105A SPEAKER: Dr. Amir Taghavy, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at UMass Dartmouth TOPIC: Nanoparticles: Fate and Transport in the Subsurface ABSTRACT: With an estimated global market value exceeding US$25 billion per annum and use in a wide variety of industrial processes and household products, nano-scale materials have also found application in subsurface engineering problems. Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) can serve as environmental agents for subsurface remediation (e.g., zero-valent-iron NPs), or on the contrary, can pose a threat to the environment (e.g., silver NPs). Extensive research is also in progress on the utility of nanoparticles in a range of petroleum engineering applications, such as acoustic and electromagnetic imaging/mapping techniques (contrast agents), nano-sensor technologies, enhanced oil recovery, and so on. Understanding the reactive transport characteristics of NPs in natural soils and rock systems is essential to having an effective design of the engineering and/or remedial schemes, or revealing their potential impact on the terrestrial ecosystems and groundwater quality. This presentation briefly describes, (i) the underlying processes that govern the retention and transport of NPs in porous media, (ii) the numerical methods used to simulate these processes, (iii) a few modeling examples, based on core-scale observations, of NP interactions with solid phase collector surfaces, co-existing dissolved compounds and other NPs, and (iv) the implementation of core-scale experimental data on the mobility of silica NPs (nSiO2) and the generation/coalescence of nSiO2-stabilized CO2-in-brine foams to make field-scale predictions of foam viscosification-induced enhancement of macroscopic sweep efficiency near the injection wells. SHORT BIO: Amir Taghavy joined Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in September 2015. A civil engineer by training and an environmental hydrogeologist, Amir received his PhD in the Environmental Water Resources Engineering from Tufts University (Medford, MA) in 2013 where he built his research profile as a modeler in the field of flow and reactive transport in porous media, with focus on the fate and transport of nanoparticles in aquatic-terrestrial systems. His next appointment was at the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin where as a postdoctoral research fellow, his research centered on the upscaling of nanotechnology-based solutions for subsurface engineering problems including the enhanced oil recovery and CO2 flood conformance. For more information please contact Dr. Mehdi Raessi, MNE Seminar Coordinator (mraessi@umassd.edu, 508-999-8496) Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome! • Description: TITLE: PATENTS AND TECHNOLOGY TRASFER: INTRODUCTION TO ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROGRAMS FOR PATENTING AND PURSUING COMMERCIAL AND SOCIETAL BENEFITS FROM ACADEMIC RESEARCH Abstract: This talk will provide a general introduction to patents and technology transfer as they are practiced at UMass and other academic institutions. Some basic information about patents and patent law will be presented, including discussion of the types of inventions arising from academic research that might be patentable, what the requirements for patentability are, and how the patent process works. Patent programs will be discussed in the context of universities and other non-profit institutions, which have established programs and policies to identify patentable inventions and other research results having commercial value, and have created technology transfer offices to exploit such developments by identifying or creating companies to whom inventions would be licensed, to enable the commercialization of beneficial products. Brief bio: David Glass serves as a consultant directing the activities of the Office of Technology Commercialization and Ventures at UMass Dartmouth. He has over twenty years experience working in technology transfer, the process of identifying and protecting inventions arising from academic research and licensing the inventions to companies for the development of beneficial products. Prior to UMass Dartmouth, he spent ten years as associate director of technology transfer at Mass. General Hospital, and a subsequent ten years as a consultant, splitting his time directing tech transfer at McLean Hospital, Joslin Diabetes Center, and Baystate Medical Center, while also consulting for the UMass President's Office and other universities, hospitals, and small biotech companies on matters relating to patent, licensing, and academic-industry relations. Dr. Glass has worked at UMass Dartmouth since August 2014. In addition to his work at UMass, he also consults for renewable fuel and industrial biotechnology firms in several fields including government regulatory affairs. Dr. Glass holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in biochemical sciences from Princeton University.
