Wendy Wahl: ConTexts / Exhibition

The exhibition ConTexts at the University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents a series of work by Wendy Wahl created from re-purposed encyclopedias. Her 2D works, made of hundreds of rolled paper strips glued onto a wooden panel, are sculpted into complex, repetitive reliefs. When light hits, they create an amazing universe that changes in surprising ways as the visitor walks by, often revealing an underlying geometry. In Wahl's newest work created for the exhibition, she uses the tops of the pages with golden edges taken from old Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedias. Ms. Wahl's 3D pieces, enhanced by shadow-producing light and made from cut pages released from its binding, might remind visitors of underwater creatures with tentacles reaching out from the walls or into the gallery space. ConTexts brings new and inspiring meaning to the phrase 'reading a page'.
For the last ten years Wendy Wahl's studio work has included a series that is created from thousands of pages of discarded and some now out of print volumes that include the Encyclopaedia Britannica, World Book, Collier's, Funk and Wagnalls and a variety of Dictionaries. The outcome of this work is an expression of her view of the connections between nature and culture. Wahl's interest is considering the associations between the tree of life, defined as the patterns of relationships that link all earthâ's species and the tree of knowledge, defined as the connected branches of human thought realized in the form of writing and speaking. This work is part of an ongoing experiment that uses the potency of printed text on paper. She is using a cultural artifact as her material for many reasons that include its unique physical qualities, the meanings that it carries and to recognize its existence. By restructuring familiar elements that in a particular format belongs to a collective consciousness, Wahl is commenting on an aspect of our station in time.
Wendy Wahl's work has been exhibited internationally and is in a number of private and public collections including the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, NY and the RISD Museum. In 2010, she was selected for Networks, a project documenting Rhode Island artists through video and exhibition. The same year, she was commissioned to create a piece for the entrance of SOFA (Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art exposition) at the Park Avenue Armory, NY. Her work has been the subject of exhibitions at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Michigan, the Newport Art Museum, RI and Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. She has received artist fellowship awards from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the US Ambassador to Tashkent, Uzbekistan selected her work for his residence through the Art in Embassy Program. She has been recognized in numerous publications including Art News, Boston Globe, Casa Vogue, Providence Journal, Metropolis, The New York Times, Architectural Digest, The New Yorker, the Britannica blog, the Curated Object and The Wall Street Journal. Currently she is a lecturer at The New School - Parson's, Department of Constructed Environments. She received an MAE in Textile Art from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in Art from California State University at Northridge. She resides in Rhode Island with her husband, John Dunnigan, and their daughter, Hannah. Wendy Wahl was born in Los Angeles, California in 1961

Wendy Wahl: ConTexts / Exhibition

The exhibition ConTexts at the University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents a series of work by Wendy Wahl created from re-purposed encyclopedias. Her 2D works, made of hundreds of rolled paper strips glued onto a wooden panel, are sculpted into complex, repetitive reliefs. When light hits, they create an amazing universe that changes in surprising ways as the visitor walks by, often revealing an underlying geometry. In Wahl's newest work created for the exhibition, she uses the tops of the pages with golden edges taken from old Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedias. Ms. Wahl's 3D pieces, enhanced by shadow-producing light and made from cut pages released from its binding, might remind visitors of underwater creatures with tentacles reaching out from the walls or into the gallery space. ConTexts brings new and inspiring meaning to the phrase 'reading a page'.
For the last ten years Wendy Wahl's studio work has included a series that is created from thousands of pages of discarded and some now out of print volumes that include the Encyclopaedia Britannica, World Book, Collier's, Funk and Wagnalls and a variety of Dictionaries. The outcome of this work is an expression of her view of the connections between nature and culture. Wahl's interest is considering the associations between the tree of life, defined as the patterns of relationships that link all earthâ's species and the tree of knowledge, defined as the connected branches of human thought realized in the form of writing and speaking. This work is part of an ongoing experiment that uses the potency of printed text on paper. She is using a cultural artifact as her material for many reasons that include its unique physical qualities, the meanings that it carries and to recognize its existence. By restructuring familiar elements that in a particular format belongs to a collective consciousness, Wahl is commenting on an aspect of our station in time.
Wendy Wahl's work has been exhibited internationally and is in a number of private and public collections including the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, NY and the RISD Museum. In 2010, she was selected for Networks, a project documenting Rhode Island artists through video and exhibition. The same year, she was commissioned to create a piece for the entrance of SOFA (Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art exposition) at the Park Avenue Armory, NY. Her work has been the subject of exhibitions at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Michigan, the Newport Art Museum, RI and Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. She has received artist fellowship awards from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the US Ambassador to Tashkent, Uzbekistan selected her work for his residence through the Art in Embassy Program. She has been recognized in numerous publications including Art News, Boston Globe, Casa Vogue, Providence Journal, Metropolis, The New York Times, Architectural Digest, The New Yorker, the Britannica blog, the Curated Object and The Wall Street Journal. Currently she is a lecturer at The New School - Parson's, Department of Constructed Environments. She received an MAE in Textile Art from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in Art from California State University at Northridge. She resides in Rhode Island with her husband, John Dunnigan, and their daughter, Hannah. Wendy Wahl was born in Los Angeles, California in 1961

ABSTRACT:
Power constraints on the sensor boards have inhibited the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) from incorporating applications that require high transmission rate between collaborating nodes. In most WSN applications, replacing the batteries on the node is either an expensive or impossible task to achieve due to the geographical location and the topology of the deployed network. Therefore, the short lifetime of the energy source on the nodes has been the main motive for achieving an energy efficient sensor network.
A typical node in WSN consists of an on board battery, radio chip, memory, sensors, and a processor. Currently, radio chips are highly optimized and carefully designed to conserve energy. Without any technological breakthrough, the development of a new radio chip that would significantly conserve power compared to other optimized chip is a daunting task. For this reason, most of the efforts for conserving energy have been focused on energy aware software stack; the core of the work is centralized in the (Medium Access Control) MAC layer because it's the layer controlling the radio state. Radio transmission and reception operations are known to be the functionality that consumes most of the energy in WSN. This thesis proposes a methodology that extends the lifetime of the sensor network by reducing the size of the transmitted packets as well as the collision rate within a network. This will be accomplished by amalgamating Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) protocols in the MAC layer. Combining TDMA and FDMA reduces the energy wasted during idle listening period and permit the network to form a scatternet-like topology that would minimize interference, expand the network capacity, and enable very complex topologies.
Often, conserving energy comes at the expense of throughput, latency, and the elasticity of the network topology. The thesis touches upon novel approaches to maintain a minimal trade-off between energy conservation and other network parameters. Finally, a software was developed as a proof of concept to the theories provided in this thesis. The software acts as a WSN emulator and can be tuned and build upon in order to test, monitor, and analyze the behavior of WSNs.

Join us for a talk and workshop on Education's Open Future to find out what Open Education is, what impact OER are already having on teaching and learning, who's doing open education projects, how to understand and apply open licenses, and how to find OER that you can use. Join us for an overview talk to learn more about OER and its impact, and stay for the workshop on finding and evaluating OER if you can. Please bring a laptop or tablet to the workshop so you can explore resources on the web.
PRESENTER BIO: Mary Lou Forward is the Executive Director of the Open Education Consortium. Among its activities, the OEC supports the development of open educational projects and policies around the world; provides consulting and training in digital, online and open strategy; and maintains the international Directory of Open Education Professionals. Prior to joining the Open Education Consortium, Mary Lou served as the Dean of African Studies for SIT Study Abroad for nearly two decades. During this time she incorporated technology and distance learning in international educational programming and developed opportunities to collaborate across countries and between diverse student and faculty groups.
