  • Online Teaching and Learning Strategies
  • Location: Online
  • Contact: CITS Instructional Development
  • Description: In this course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for both online and blended teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching strategies for both methodologies. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention. Visit the Online Teaching Guide to learn more about getting started with teaching online.

  • If You Flip It, They Will Learn: A How-To Guide for Flipping Any Course in Any Discipline
  • Location: LIB-314
  • Contact: Office of Faculty Development
  • Description: Abstract: "Flipping the classroom" moves passive, background instruction outside of the classroom, leaving in-class time for student-centered activities that foster greater comprehensive and collaborative learning. The efficacy of this pedagogical approach has been demonstrated time and again, but instructors sometimes struggle with the logistics of flipping their courses and how to best use class time. In this session, we will discuss strategies for flipping courses in any discipline, explore two web-based formats for delivering course content to students outside class, and discuss approaches for ensuring outside-of-class student learning and student accountability for class preparation. Finally, we will discuss web-based resources for enhancing student-centered learning in class, while also fostering student creativity and genuine student interest in the course subject matter. This will be a blended presentation/workshop with ample time for Q&A and discussion. Please bring a web-enabled smart device. About the Presenter: Dr. Thomas Mennella is a molecular geneticist and has been an instructor in higher education for more than eight years. As an Assistant Professor at Delaware State University (DSU), Tom experimented with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and was an early-adopter of the iClicker student response system. Now an Associate Professor at Bay Path University, Tom primarily teaches Genetics and Cell and Molecular Biology. He is an early-adopter of the flipped classroom format at Bay Path and is intimately involved in Bay Path’s iPad initiative. At Bay Path University, Tom has given professional development presentations on the flipped classroom format, on the logistics of running a flipped classroom, and on the use of Tegrity as a web-based platform for lecture capture. In addition, he has presented the flipped classroom philosophy to prospective students and their parents at Bay Path recruitment events. Tom has given numerous scientific presentations, and more recently, Tom has become an outspoken proponent of the flipped learning approach, presenting at NERCOMP2014, guest blogging on EmergingEdTech.com (http://www.emergingedtech.com/2014/07/my-flipped-classroom-i-will-never-teach-another-way-again/), and invited to present on flipped learning once again at NERCOMP2015 in March. Lunch will be served; if you wish to attend, please register through the Events calendar on UMD website.

  • Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher / Student
  • Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: The CVPA Art Education Department is pleased to present Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher/ Student an exhibition featuring over 70 works created by students currently enrolled in the Master of Art Education (MAE) Program along with MAE alumni and the Pre-K through 12th grade students they currently teach. The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The exhibition Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher/ Student aims to celebrate the cyclical nature of art education as participants shift from artist, teacher, and student throughout their careers. This exhibition endeavors to explore the variety of stages our students experience throughout their career as well as to highlight their professional achievements and celebrate the work they are doing in their classrooms each day. This juried exhibition features work in a variety of media including painting, photography, mixed media, drawing, digital art, and sculpture. The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The MAE program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The MAE program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields. Info and images:
