  • Mechanical Engineering (MNE) Seminar by Dr. Dibakar Datta
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Mechanical Engineering (MNE) Seminar Tuesday, April 5th 2016 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Textile Building, Room 101E SPEAKER: Dr. Dibakar Datta, Postdoctoral Research Scholar at Stanford University, CA TOPIC: Nanoindentation Studies of Materials: Modeling Dislocations by Atomistic Simulations and Analysis of Experimental Data ABSTRACT: Nanoindentation is the ubiquitous technique for measuring mechanical properties of materials. In practical applications, mainly alloys (mixture of metals) are used. A priori, the mechanical properties of these alloys are unknown. Despite many studies both theoretical and experimental, there are many issues that still demand thorough investigation e.g. motion of dislocation under the indenter, plastic instability, and phase transformation during nanoindentation. This work addresses these issues. We have implemented indentation load and displacement in Parallel Dislocation Simulator (ParaDiS) code where image stress field of dislocations in isotropic elastic half-space is computed by spectral methods. Our work models the motion of dislocations under the indenter for externally applied indentation load/displacement. Besides ParaDiS, we performed molecular statics (MS) and dynamics (MD) simulations to model the load-displacement relation during nanoindentation of Al and Al-Mg alloys. Effect of different parameters such as indentation rate, indenter radius, and percentage of Mg in Al-Mg alloys have been considered. Our results provide in-depth insight about the dislocations initiation, nucleation, and phase transformation during the nanoindentation process. Finally, we connect our findings with different models and methods for analyzing experimental nanoindentation data to determine various materials properties e.g. indentation modulus, hardness, dislocation density etc. Our work provides deeper understanding of defect mechanics and other aspects of materials during nanoindentation. BIO: Dr. Dibakar Datta is currently a postdoctoral research scholar in Mechanics and Computation group at Stanford University. He received his PhD from Brown University in 2015 with major in Solid Mechanics and minors in Physics and Chemistry. While at Brown, he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania for a year. Before moving to United States, he completed his studies in India, Spain, and France. His research focuses on the modeling of energy systems, atomistic mechanics of nanomaterials, and modeling imperfections in crystalline solids. For more information please contact Dr. Mehdi Raessi, MNE Seminar Coordinator (mraessi@umassd.edu, 508-999-8496). All are welcome. Students taking MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! • Mechanical Engineering Seminar by Dr. Jun Li
  • Location: Textiles Building , 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Mechanical Engineering (MNE) Seminar Friday, April 8th, 2016 2:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Textile Building, Room 105A SPEAKER: Dr. Jun Li, Software QA Manager at Abaqus Solver Team, Dassault Systems Simulia Corp, RI TOPIC: Predictive Modeling of Multiscale Materials ABSTRACT: Multiscale approaches of materials modeling are coming of age and represent a technology shift, both from the fundamental scientific and applied industrial perspectives. The use of computation to understand and even design multiscale materials is becoming a trend. However, the predictive power of simulations is hindered by enormous quantities of information across multiple scales. The question is that what level of detail is required to build predictive multiscale models. In this presentation, I will discuss three examples along this line of thought. First, a hybrid experimental-computational procedure is presented for modeling polyethylene thin films used in the NASA Superpressure Balloon. The film is modeled as an orthotropic membrane with a modified analytic form of free-volume, where mechanical dilatation and distorsion affect the temporal scale of polymeric deformation processes from the perspective of relative mobility of molecule network. This allows the model calibrated to capture experimentally characterized behavior of long-duration uniaxial tension and biaxial inflation up to yielding over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates for balloon design. Second, a range of statistical continuum plasticity models were studied to understand the influence of microscale material randomness on macroscopic elastic-plastic transitions. Third, a multiscale analytical approach is described to model trabecular bone with Micro-CT representation of constituent volume fractions at multiple levels. Finally, I will discuss a workflow integrating predictive modeling, optimization design and additive manufacturing of multiscale materials to meet the challenges of material-by-design. BIO: Dr. Jun Li is currently a software quality assurance (QA) manager at Abaqus solver team of Dassault Systemes Simulia Corp, RI. Before that, he spent two years as a postdoctoral scholar at the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories in the California Institute of Technology, working on NASA Superpressure Balloon project. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2012, as well as M.S. in Mathematics and in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. At UIUC, he contributed to the mechanics of random and fractal materials leading to over 10 peer-reviewed journal publications and a keynote at the 10th US National Congress on Computational Mechanics. His research interest is to develop advanced theoretical and computational tools combined with experiments for the assessment, design and optimization of novel materials and structures in various applications. For more information please contact Dr. Mehdi Raessi, MNE Seminar Coordinator (mraessi@umassd.edu, 508-999-8496). Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome! The vacuum has been filled with sensational mass media depictions of people with addiction that perpetuate a lurid fascination with the dysfunctional side of what is a preventable and treatable health condition. Just like women with breast cancer, or people with HIV/AIDS, a grass roots social justice movement is emerging. Courageous addiction recovery advocates have come out of the shadows and are organizing to end discrimination and move toward recovery-based solutions. • Description: TITLE: FUNCTIONAL POTENTIAL AS A DRIVER OF TAXON-SPECIFIC FITNESS IN CYANOBACTERIAL BLOOMS Abstract:Cyanobacteria are a common component of phytoplankton of aquatic ecosystems. In freshwaters and some estuaries, dense accumulations, or blooms of cyanobacteria are a common phenomenon. Blooms may have a negative impact on recreational activities and they potentially impact human and ecosystem health by producing a variety of bioactive compounds, including some characterized as toxins (hepatotoxins, neurotoxins). Many bloom-formers are also capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen (N2), providing them a niche when combined N is limiting in the environment. A field study conducted in the St. Johns River, Florida, showed that by using facultative diazotrophy, the toxin-producing, N2-fixing cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii effectively competes in the phytoplankton community under both N limiting and N replete conditions. Studies from Klamath River and San Francisco Bay Delta, California, demonstrated microdiversity among the populations of Microcystis aeruginosa that is not evident in existing culture isolates, and gradual adaptation to the local conditions that may influence toxicity. Laboratory studies further suggested that light intensity plays a key role in the relative success of toxic and nontoxic strains of M. aeruginosa in blooms. These data demonstrate that a range of environmental and community-level interactions influence the composition and toxicity of cyanobacterial blooms.

  • Description: TOPIC: IDENTIFICATION OF HUMAN POSES FROM IMAGES USING SPACE COMPLETION ANIMATION OF PEOPLE LOCATION: College of Engineering Conference Room, Textile's Building - Room 101E ABSTRACT: Identifying human poses from images is one of the important techniques that can be used in many applications. The technique can automatically detect and estimate the 2D poses of humans in images under uncontrolled imaging conditions. The identification of human poses from images is used in some important applications such as rescuing people using robots under natural disasters and estimating fitness conditions of people by taking the images of their sport activities. The goal of this project is to detect human poses in standing positions. In the project, some image transformation techniques are applied in obtaining the format of poses from images. An existing Space Completion Animation of People (SCAPE) algorithm was implemented to perform the detection and estimation of poses from images and video. SCAPE algorithm is a data-driven method for building a human shape model that spans variation in both subject shape and poses. This algorithm is based on a representation that incorporates both articulated and non-rigid deformations. The implementation of the identification of people poses was tested and validated on multiple image sets. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend.
