  • Location: > See description for location

  • Description: Department of Fisheries Oceanography Characterizing Changes in the Population Dynamics of American Shad in the Connecticut River Jason Boucher Northeast Fisheries Science Center Wednesday, September 28, 2016 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm SMAST II, Room 157 200 Mill Road, Fairhaven, MA The American shad is an anadromous clupeid with a wide latitudinal distribution, spanning from Florida to Canada. Over this range the species exhibits latitudinal variation in a number of vital rates, including growth, fecundity, and parity, resulting in distinct populations by river segregated due to natal homing tendencies. In 2015, we were tasked with sampling the Connecticut River population to identify potential changes in vital rates since the previous landmark study in the 1970's. Adult shad were collected at four locations along the river throughout the spawning season: at the river mouth (Old Lyme, CT), at Holyoke Dam (Hadley, MA), at the Cabot Power Station (Turners Falls, MA), and at the Vernon Power Station (Vernon, VT). The spawning migration began in late April, while temperatures were still below the known 14C threshold, and continued through the end of June. Throughout the spawning season, females were consistently larger (both length and weight) and older than males; however, there was a higher ratio of males at all sites except Holyoke. Sex-specific ages were not different between locations or time periods, indicating a well-mixed population throughout the spawning season. Spawning condition females, including running-ripe individuals, were collected at the most upstream sampling site (southern Vermont), providing evidence for the first time that increased fish passage to the historic habitat is being utilized for spawning. While the population has increased in size over the past forty years, truncated age distributions combined with only 2% parity indicate that American shad in the Connecticut River may no longer be robust to environmental variability. Note: Seminar will be simulcast to SMAST I, Room 204 You can view the seminar live by clicking here: https://echosystem.umassd.edu:8443/ess/portal/section/45f27129-23d3-49ed-85e2-e3fdb032c644 Please note: the earliest you will be able to log in is 15 minutes before the regularly scheduled time. • ORAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM FOR DOCTORAL CANDIDACY BY: John Summerfield
  • Location: Science & Engineering Building, Lester W. Cory Conference Room: Room 213A
  • Cost: free
  • Contact: ECE: Electrical & Computer Engineering Department
  • Description: TOPIC: A GEOMETRIC APPROACH TO SAR/BISAR PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS AND FLIGHTPATH SYNTHESIS LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing is a signal processing technique that emulates a very large antenna aperture by moving a physically small antenna over a much larger spatial distance. The effective aperture is the spatial distance covered by the synthetic aperture platform, and thus flightpath design is critical to system imaging performance. Conventional synthetic aperture imaging systems are monostatic system where the transmitter and receiver are co-located. The field of mathematics known as differential geometry provides a framework for describing curves and surfaces and offers a powerful tool for the analysis and synthesis of bistatic synthetic aperture (BiSAR) flightpaths. A synthetic aperture imaging system like all other imaging systems has limited resolution which is defined by the spatial frequency bandwidth. The system imaging performance can be defined by evaluating the system response to a point target. The point spread function or ambiguity function of a system describes the imaging performance in the spatial frequency domain known as k-space and incorporates widely used performance metrics such as resolution, peak to side lobe ratio and integrated side lobe ratio. The proposed goal is to use differential geometry to study different flightpaths for developing a tool for the analysis and synthesis of bistatic synthetic aperture flightpaths. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. Open to the public. Advisor: Dr. Dayalan P. Kasilingam Committee Members: Dr. John R. Buck and Dr. Paul J. Gendron, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth; Dr. Dana Fine, Department of Mathematics, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth; Dr. Brian Rigling, Department of Electrical Engineering, Wright State University *For further information, please contact Dr. Dayalan P. • Description: TOPIC: ON IMPLICIT & EXPLICIT HIGH ORDER SSP METHODS WITH A VARIETY OF STAGES, STEPS, AND DERIVATIVES FOR LINEAR AND NONLINEAR PROBLEMS. Abstract: High order spatial discretizations with monotonicity properties are often desirable for the solution of hyperbolic PDEs. These methods can advantageously be coupled with high order strong stability preserving time discretizations. The search for high order strong stability time-stepping methods with large allowable strong stability coefficient has been an active area of research over the last two decades. This research has shown that explicit SSP Runge--Kutta methods exist only up to fourth order, and implicit ones only up to sixth order, while multistep SSP methods have small allowable time step. To break these order barriers and SSP time-step bounds, we turn to general (multistep, multi-stage) linear methods of order two and above. Order conditions and monotonicity conditions for such methods are worked out in terms of the method coefficients, and we propose a numerical optimization to find optimal methods of up to five steps, eight stages, and tenth order. Another approach to breaking the order barrier is to restrict ourselves to solving only linear autonomous problems. In this case the order conditions simplify and this order barrier is lifted: explicit SSP Runge--Kutta methods of any linear order exist, but these methods reduce to second order when applied to nonlinear problems. We propose to seek explicit SSP Runge--Kutta methods with large allowable time-step, that feature high linear order and simultaneously have the optimal fourth order nonlinear order. Finally, we turn to multiderivative time-stepping methods which have recently been implemented with hyperbolic PDEs. We describe sufficient conditions for a two-derivative multistage method to be SSP, and formulate an optimization problem that will be used to find optimal SSP multistage two-derivative methods. These methods will be tested on a variety of scalar hyperbolic partial differential equations, to demonstrate the need for the SSP condition and investigate the sharpness of the SSP time-step.

  • Description: Claire T. Carney Library, Stoico/FIRST FED Charitable Foundation Grand Reading Room Join us to watch this documentary film, highlighting stories from the Boston Women's Movement. Stay after the film for free refreshments and a discussion with the filmmaker Catherine Russo. "Starting in 1968, the Second Wave of Feminism rippled across the U.S., demanding expanded possibilities for women of all races and classes. In the Boston area, students, professionals, community activists and working class mothers came together to demand change. This feature length documentary provides testimony of the movement's transforming energy, creativity and determination. Many of the culture wars being waged today came out of this movement and the backlash it incurred. The video traces the history of the women's movement coming out of the Anti-war and Civil Rights movements and continuing through the 1970s. This production includes 22 interviews with movement activists and archival material in the form of photos, videos, posters, music, graphics, newsletters and newspapers from the period. I worked for years to locate this material, asking women for their personal collections and searching through libraries and the web. This video is not about feminist stars as defined by the media. The interviewees are the women who fought these struggles in groups and collectives and developed a new way of working together. They include working class women, black women, Latinas, lesbians, socialist feminists and the radical and cultural feminists of the late 60's and 70's. I doubt that you have seen this revolutionary force portrayed before." -Catherine Russo

UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) proudly presents Bill Plympton Animator; Crowned King of Indie Animation: Drawings from Cheatin'. This exhibition is a showcase of original drawings and production art of animator, cartoonist, and filmmaker Bill Plympton. Nearly 100 original graphite drawings from the artist's recent film Cheatin' will be on display along with other essential production materials and related media to reveal a "behind the scenes" look at Plympton's artistic process. Accompanying the art will be a continuous screening of the feature film Cheatin' in its entirety in the gallery. Video tutorials, produced by the artist himself, further the educational experience of "handmade" animation. This special exhibition curated for UMass Dartmouth can be seen at the CVPA Campus Gallery (UMass Dartmouth Main Campus) from September 29 through November 2, 2016. Bill Plympton, who has been called The King of Indie Animation, is the first person to independently hand-draw an entire animated feature film. He has created over 40 animated short films and seven animated features. Plympton received Oscar nominations for various animated shorts along with winning the Cannes Palme d'Or and the Canal+ Award for short films at Cannes Critics' Week. Bill Plympton will speak about his work and provide insight into the wild world of cartooning and independent animation. While the event is free and open to the public, reservations for the talk are required and can be made through this link: www.eventbrite.com/e/bill-plympton-talk-at-umass-dartmouth-tickets-27607014323 Excerpts from Artist's Statement "Why is it that animation is stereotyped as being only aimed at children and created by computer graphics? Why can't adults see stories for themselves, created in the fantastically free style of a hand-drawn animator? The look of this film is very special to me. When I started my career as an illustrator, I developed a style that I loved, watercolor with a pen and ink crosshatch overlay. But because of the limits of technology, I was never able to recreate my favorite style in animation. However, with the new digital technology available now, I've been able to exactly replicate that beautiful watercolor look." Biography Bill Plympton moved to New York City in 1968 and began his career creating cartoons for publications such as The New York Times, Playboy, National Lampoon, and Screw. In 1987, he was nominated for an Oscar for his animated short Your Face. In 2005, Plympton received another Oscar nomination, this time for his short Guard Dog. Push Comes to Shove won the prestigious Cannes 1991 Palme d'Or; and in 2001, another short film, Eat, won the Grand Prize for Short Films in Cannes Critics' Week. After producing many shorts that appeared on MTV, Spike, and Mike's, he turned his talent to feature films. Since 1991, he has made ten feature films. Seven of them, The Tune, Mondo Plympton, I Married a Strange Person, Mutant Aliens, Hair High, Idiots and Angels, and Cheatin', are all animated features. Bill Plympton has also collaborated with Madonna, Kanye West, Terry Gilliam, and "Weird Al" Yankovic in a number of music videos, animated films, and book projects. In 2006, Plympton received the Winsor McCay Lifetime Achievement Award from The Annie Awards. This event made possible through the generous support of Allan and Priscilla Ditchfield.
