Online Teaching and Learning Strategies

- Description: In this course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for both online and blended teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching strategies for both methodologies. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention.

- Description: TOPIC:USE OF SUB-MICRON SIZED ELECTROSPUN FIBERS TO ENHANCE THE SURFACE FUNCTIONALITY: CHARACTERIZATION AND APPLICATIONS
Abstract: Functionalization of polymeric fibers can be used as a multipotent tool to facilitate their application in different research fields such as tissue engineering, drug delivery and ion-exchange. In tissue engineering and drug delivery, biodegradable polymer-based textile structures (woven, knitted, or non-woven) are becoming more popular as their specific chemical composition, mechanical properties and morphological features can be controlled and modified according to the required application. Most bio-inert polymers lack the functional motifs for specific bioactivity; however, functionalization of scaffolds can provide biological functions to actively induce tissue regeneration and promote cell adhesion by targeting specific cell-matrix interactions. Functionalization is also a powerful tool to incorporate specific drug molecules which can then be released in a sustained manner at the target site. In the current study, poly(caprolactone) (PCL) fibers were fabricated by electrospinning, and functionalized through wet chemical techniques that are preferable for complex 3D structure of these fibrous scaffolds. The functionalized electrospun PCL fibers were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Results from this study showed the favorable effect of functionalization on altering cellular behavior. Next, the functional groups introduced via hydrolysis (-COOH) were ionized to impart a negative charge to the fiber surface and doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), an FDA approved anticancer drug, was ionized to impart a positive charge at a certain pH. The pH-sensitivity of both the materials was utilized to bind DOX electrostatically to the functionalized PCL fibers, with an aim to create pH-responsive drug delivery vehicle for the site-specific delivery of DOX. Results indicate successful electrostatic binding of DOX to functionalized electrospun PCL fibers and a high drug payload was achieved. The drug delivery response can be modulated by introduction of suitable stimuli (pH in this case) by utilization of a composite scaffold system comprising of drug-loaded scaffolds and hydrogels that release acid in the vicinity of scaffolds. Finally, polymer functionalization was used to obtain fibers with ion-exchange properties that could be used in environmental engineering as well as drug delivery applications. This study again emphasized the role of fiber diameter and surface area in enhancing the surface functionality of polymers. In summary, this research enabled us to gain a basic understanding of the functionalization process of electrospun fibers and how this functionalization process could be exploited to suit various end use applications. The current research established the fact that appropriately functionalized submicron to nanometer fibrous assemblies are promising candidates for next generation tissue-engineered 3D scaffolds/drug delivery vehicles.

UMass Dartmouth College of Visual & Performing Arts faculty and students are presenting their interactive Weaving with Light exhibition, recently showcased at the premier art fair SOFA CHICAGO through March 3, at the University's Campus Gallery. The installation pays tribute to the nearby city of New Bedford and its historical connection to the textile industry. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 p.m. with the artist talk at 5 pm at the gallery.
The Weaving With Light exhibition was designed to be highly interactive, enticing visitors to participate in the actual production of cloth, drawing their attention to the making process used by contemporary fiber artists. Within the exhibition, several operational single-person looms are arranged in a semicircle accompanied by the vintage still photos of mill buildings, interiors, and workers to illustrate some of the actual operations and conditions of historic mill life.
"Every step of the process has involved the discovery and problem solving aspects of design and making and realizing the full potential of the project through innovative methods, research and observation, material sourcing and testing, and overarching aesthetic decisions," Professor Hamlin said leading up to SOFA CHICAGO. "The students have extended themselves in both their intellectual and physical stamina."
The warp yarns that feed each loom rise from the front of the loom to a rattle gathering at the top of the wall. The ascending yarns create the illusion of an enclosed space to emulate the conditions of mill life.
Students and faculty traveled to Chicago this past November for the prestigious art exhibition dedicated to Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art (SOFA). Working on the Weaving with Light installation includes MFA Ceramics student Hanna Vogel, MFA Graphic Design student Kate Dickinson, MFA Wood/Furniture Design student John Middleton, MFA Digital Media student Alec Andersen, and BFA Textile Design/Fiber Arts students Tony Beal and Christopher Rogers. The group is being advised by Artisanry Professor James Lawton with assistance from Charlotte Hamlin, who serves as CVPA's coordinator for graduate studies and research, as well as CVPA Professional Technician Shingo Furukawa.
UMass Dartmouth was one of six entries selected for prestigious university art exhibition in Chicago, including Illinois Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, San Diego State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Iowa. SOFA CHICAGO ranked #7 in the USA Today Reader's Choice 10 Best Art Events.
UMass Dartmouth's CVPA Campus Gallery is located on the first floor of the CVPA Building on the Main Campus (285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA 02747). Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-4pm and Friday 10am-noon.
