Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher / Student
- Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts
, 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
- Contact: University Art Gallery
- Description: The CVPA Art Education Department is pleased to present Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher/ Student an exhibition featuring over 70 works created by students currently enrolled in the Master of Art Education (MAE) Program along with MAE alumni and the Pre-K through 12th grade students they currently teach. The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
The exhibition Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher/ Student aims to celebrate the cyclical nature of art education as participants shift from artist, teacher, and student throughout their careers. This exhibition endeavors to explore the variety of stages our students experience throughout their career as well as to highlight their professional achievements and celebrate the work they are doing in their classrooms each day. This juried exhibition features work in a variety of media including painting, photography, mixed media, drawing, digital art, and sculpture.
The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The MAE program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The MAE program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields.

TOPIC:
Computational Investigation of Underwater Buoyant Oil Jets
ABSTRACT:
Using computational simulations, the behavior of underwater buoyant oil jets is investigated in two different configurations. In the first set, the directions of the jet flow and the buoyancy force are aligned. The results show three main jet breakup regimes: atomization, skirt-type and pinch-off. The computational results agree well with the experimental results. The computational and experimental results both suggest that in a buoyancy-driven regime, jet breakup occurs only when the jet is accelerated to a point where the local Richardson number becomes less than 0.4, in which case the local Weber number is above 10. The results also demonstrate that the correlation proposed by Masutani and Adams as the boundary for the atomization regime can be extended for turbulent jets as well. The computational results reveal the mechanisms leading to formation of small droplets around the perimeter of energetic jets and umbrella-shaped jet separations at less energetic cases. In the second configuration, the directions of the jet flow and the buoyancy force are opposing or at an angle. The injection angle is varied from perfectly vertical to 45Ëš from the vertical position. Transition from stable to unstable behavior of the jet is observed. The results show that the transitional Ri increases as the injection angle is increased, until the injection angle is approximately 15Ëš. Beyond this point the transitional Ri begins decreasing with increasing the injection angle. The computational results also reveal that it is the vortex structures and their shedding that leads to the jet interface instability.

- Description: The Buddha's Footprint: An Environmental History of Asia
Thursday, February 26th, 12pm-1pm
Claire T. Carney Library, Room 314
Dr. Johan Elverskog
Southern Methodist University
Contrary to popular imaginings, the Dharma has not historically been an inherently environmental religion. Rather, early Buddhism was a prosperity theology that succeeded largely on account of its willingness to exploit both people and natural resources on the commodity frontier. As such, by investigating the links between Buddhism and agricultural expansion this talk will explore how Buddhists radically transformed Asia's environment.
Johan Elverskog is Altshuler University Distinguished Teaching Professor and Chair of Religious Studies at SMU. He is the author of numerous books and articles, all of which focus on the history of Buddhism across Asia. During 2014-2015 he is a visiting fellow at the Center for Buddhist-Muslim Understanding at Mahidol University, Bangkok.
