Annu Palakunnathu Matthew: An Indian from India
Curated by Viera Levitt
Exhibition Dates: Nov 13, 2014 - Jan 25, 2015
Reception: AHA! Night, Thursday Nov 13, 6-9 pm, Artist Talk 7 pm
Photo Booth: AHA! Night, Thursday December 11, 6-8 pm
The University Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo show by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, American artist born in England and raised in India. The exhibition will take place at UMass Dartmouth's New Bedford campus between November 13 and January 25, 2015 .
Annu Palakunnathu Matthew's work explores and challenges our perception of identity, photography and memory. She enlivens old black and white, or sepia toned photos through a surprising and skillful technique of digital manipulation that preserves the background while adding figures of herself or others. With this body of work, Ms. Matthew challenges our perceptions of time and collective memory, while also asking us to look with new eyes at the much cherished family photograph, especially those that were perhaps brought to this country by our immigrant grandparents. Additionally, by replacing static images with animations that are displayed on iPads and inserted into an old book or picture frames, Matthew adds surprise, an inverted dimension of time and contemporary interpretation into a traditional form of media.
As part of our commitment to community engagement, we will have a photo booth taking professional photographs of any three generations of woman from the same immigrant family during AHA! Night on Thursday , December 11 from 6 to 8 pm . Through these portraits, the artist wants to create work that both depict the changing face of American immigration and also chronicles the continual renewal of American diversity. The visitors can bring the whole family and get a print to take home. Learn more at tinyurl.com/immigrantphoto .

- Description: ECATS: ELECTRONIC CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES “TAKING THE TEMPERATURE OF LEARNING IN THE ONLINE CLASSROOM”
Other than when your online learners are posting responses to discussion forums and submitting major assignments and projects, how do you know what’s happening with them in their learning environments? How can you “take the temperature” and identify gaps that may be occurring with your online learners about specific concepts and topics?
SPEAKER BIO
Leah Chuchran, MS, is the Digital Learning Specialist at the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship. She has been involved in higher education for nearly 10 years, integrating areas of online instruction, faculty enrichment programs, instructional design, assessment and evaluation best practices, particularly with technology-enhanced models. Leah holds an MS in Organizational Management from Chadron State College, a graduate certificate in Instructional Technology from San Diego State University and her BS in Information Systems from the University of Phoenix.

BMEBT Seminar Presentation by Dr. Jens K. Plassmeier from MIT
- Location: Textiles Building 101E
- Contact: BMEBT Seminar Series
- Description: TOPIC: Synthetic Biology: An overview of the achievements and possibilities of an emerging field
ABSTRACT: During the presentation the concept of Synthetic Biology will be introduced and a short history of this newer discipline will be presented. An overview of the possibilities of Synthetic Biology will be given along with an introduction of important terminology and the iGEM competition. The main part of the presentation will focus on examples that show the successful use of Synthetic Biology. These examples will include the use of synthetic circuits for different projects, the making of a synthetic genome, industrial applications, and interesting iGEM projects. The talk concludes with an outlook of the possibilities that Synthetic Biology holds.
Brief Bio:
Dr. Plassmeier is a Research Scientist in the Department of Biology at MIT with expertise in molecular genetics and synthetic biology. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Bielefeld in Germany under the tutelage of Professor Dr. Albert Puehler, where he studied regulation of propionate metabolism in the industrially useful microorganism, Corynebacterium glutamicum. Dr. Plassmeiers current projects consist of constructing a minimal genome organism using cutting-edge synthetic biology tools. He serves as coordinator for this project and is examining the production of amino acids, biofuels, biopolymers, and other value added products. In addition to supervising day-to-day research laboratory activities, he has served as a consultant for two up-and-coming biotechnology companies in the Cambridge, MA area and most recently served as a judge for the 2014 iGEM competition, held in Boston, MA.
