  • Mechanical Engineering MS Thesis Defense by Mr. Bolong Shi

  • Description: Mechanical Engineering MS THESIS DEFENSE by Mr. Bolong Shi November 22, 2016 2:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Textile Building, Room 101E TOPIC: Statistical GD&T Tolerance Verification by Predictive Confidence Interval ABSTRACT: Flatness, surface profile and straightness are three of the most fundamental GD&T (Geometri Dimensioning and Tolerancing) tolerances for evaluating dimensional and geometrical characteristics on critical features of a part. The wildly accepted tolerance verification methods are Least Square Method (LSM) and Minimum Zone Method (MZM). However, the limitations of these methods hindered their application in some important aspects, for example, they are not able to ensure the complete conformance of GD&T tolerances even when a feature passed their verification. This is caused by the paradox of the finite and limited measurement samples and the complete conformance verification of a continuous feature in a tolerance zone. In this work, a Statistical GD&T Tolerance Verification Method (SVM), based on cosine discrete transform (DCT) regression and statistical predictive interval estimation, has been proposed and developed to verify the GD&T tolerances. The core idea of the new method is to predict the variation range of all measured/unmeasured locations with predefined confidence level, i.e. resolving the paradox with statistical inference method. Simulation experiments are designed and the algorithms are developed for validation. The results showed its efficiency and effectiveness. This method can also be extended for verification of other GD&T tolerances with minor modifications. ADVISOR: Dr. Wenzhen Huang, Mechanical Engineering Dept. • MASTER OF SCIENCE THESIS DEFENSE BY: Steven Brown

  • Description: TOPIC: MEASURING DEFLECTION OF A ROAD SURFACE LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: Due to an event known as the frost-thaw cycle, roadways in colder climates are susceptible to damage caused by heavy vehicles driving on asphalt supported by soft, water-logged soil. The soft road underbed is unable to properly support the asphalt, and cracks may form leading to further road damage. Civil engineers attempt to prevent this damage by implementing Seasonal Load Restrictions (SLRs) on heavy trafficked roads when weather conditions predict that the soil may become too soft under roads. To assist civil engineers in assessing the accuracy of weather-impacted predictions, a sensor system designed to measure the temperature gradient underneath roadways was developed by a team of graduate students at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, under a federal Department of Transportation grant awarded to Dr. Paul Fortier of the College of Engineering Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. During the development stage of this project, the desire arose to directly measure the impact heavy vehicles have on vulnerable roadways. It is to this end that the development of a sensor capable of measuring roadway deflection was commissioned. By directly measuring the movement of asphalt when a vehicle passes over it, the efficacy of an SLR could be quantified, leading to refinements of the methods used in determining the conditions necessary to warrant an SLR, which can have impact on local travel and commerce. Utilizing micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) components and low-power microcontrollers allows integration of a deflection sensor into the existing temperature-measuring system with little need for reconfiguration of the prebuilt systems. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. Open to the public. • Research Component of PhD Qualifier Exam by: MD Nashid Anjum

  • Contact: ECE: Electrical & Computer Engineering Department
  • Description: TOPIC: Co-Existence in Millimeter-Wave Wireless Body Area Network LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 213A ABSTRACT: A WBAN consists of few wearable sensors attached to body parts, clothes, implanted underneath the skins or inner body. A WBAN consists of a central hub (i.e., base station) that controls and communicates with sensors. WBANs may deeply overlap on each other in a crowded area such as hospital because of their rapid mobility, small network size, flexible topology, and higher network density. This overlapping may raise severe interference issues. In case of deeply overlapping WBANs, interference avoidance employing power control schemes is plausibly unrealistic, because, nodes and hub from other network may stay much closer than nodes and hub of its own network. In this research work, we formulate the WBAN self-coexistence problem as a linear integer programming optimization problem considering service priorities and user demands and propose a solution named Fair Frame Distribution for Self-coexistence (FDS). Further, I found that 60 GHz based communication is probably the best fit for WBAN compared to the traditional 2.4 GHz based communication considering its quality of compact network coverage, device miniaturization, efficient frequency reuse, multi-gigabyte transmission rate, and the therapeutic merits for human health. The efficiency of the mmWave based WBAN can be improved by allowing coexistence i.e., mitigating interference among the WBANs. We formulate the coexistence problem as non-cooperative, distributed power control game. The existence of Nash equilibrium is proved and the efficiency of the Nash equilibrium is improved by modifying the utility function and introducing a linear and an exponential pricing factor. Simulation result shows the proposed pricing policy significantly improves the efficiency of the optimal solution with respect to Pareto optimality and social optimality. To introduce different service priority levels such as delay sensitivity this research work utilizes the concept of discount factor employing repeated game. Though both of pricing and repeated game significantly improve the efficiency of the optimal equilibrium. This research work employed Nash bargaining solution to improve fairness of the optimal equilibrium. Extensive simulation result shows that Nash bargaining solution significantly improves the equilibrium efficiency and fairness. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the company wanted to do something spectacular and so chose "Into the Woods" for its fall musical debut. The performers have been working since the end of September and rehearse amidst course schedules, exams, and other extracurricular activities. "Into the Woods" follows the life of the Baker as he and his wife are tasked by the Witch to collect an assortment of magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse a curse placed on their family tree. Nathaniel Tarantino will direct the performance with Jack Tiernan playing the leading role of the Baker. It's a show that captures the childlike wonder we all feel when listening to a fairy tale--with exuberant costumes that offer a contrast to the dark, consuming woods. The characterizations are on the extreme side of the spectrum, with the performers overacting to evoke a fairy-tale world. Between the beautiful songs and gut-wrenching jokes, prepare for a night of laughter, entertainment, and quality theater. Officers for the UMassD Theater Company are, president Fatima Fraga-Alvarez, vice president Lyndon Davis, treasurer Meghan Lynch and secretary Cheyanne Patterson.

  • Opening Reception for Stateless: Artists Respond to the Refugee Crisis
  • Location: University Art Gallery
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: Featuring the work of Gohar Dashti in conjunction with Mehdi Ghadyanloo, Pantea Karimi, and Jodi Stevens Reception: Thursday, AHA! Night, November 10, 6-8 pm Exhibition Stateless brings together the work of four artists who reflect on the recent refugee crisis and issues of human displacement and migration. The Syrian conflict and the subsequent European refugee crisis have dominated not only the news headlines, but also discussions among artists and intellectuals around the world. Due to the significance of these recent events, the College of Visual and Performing Arts has dedicated an exhibition to the topic of migration. Stateless will bring together the works of four artists who reflect on the current refugee crisis in the Middle East. Through a series of astonishing staged photographs in the remote deserts of the Middle East, Tehran-based photographer Gohar Dashti envisions the plight of homelessness for the millions of people who have recently fled such war zones. Known for his ironic and surreal trompe l'oeil murals in Tehran, through a series of intricate prints artist Mehdi Ghadyanloo displays the difficulties of displacement by portraying crowds of people trapped in uncertain situations. Meanwhile, California-based artist Pantea Karimi showcases a multi-media installation of abstracted medieval maps of major Middle Eastern ports, alluding to a glorious bygone era during which migration of people from and to the Middle East contributed to the advancement of knowledge and commerce. Lastly, through a series of threads interrupted by objects and images, which capture the precarious lives of stateless people, the Southcoast-based Site-specific installation artist Jodi Stevens follows the grim patterns of migration from the Middle East to Europe. In its entirety, the exhibition hopes to inspire the viewer to reflect on the struggles endured in the displacement of migrants. Curated by Dr. Pamela Karimi with assistance from students in her Islamic Art class Special thanks to Robert Klein Gallery in Boston and Howard Griffin Gallery in London University Art Gallery College of Visual and Performing Arts UMass Dartmouth, Star Store Campus 715 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA 02740
