Annu Palakunnathu Matthew: An Indian from India
Curated by Viera Levitt
Exhibition Dates: Nov 13, 2014 - Jan 25, 2015
Reception: AHA! Night, Thursday Nov 13, 6-9 pm, Artist Talk 7 pm
Photo Booth: AHA! Night, Thursday December 11, 6-8 pm
The University Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo show by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, American artist born in England and raised in India. The exhibition will take place at UMass Dartmouth's New Bedford campus between November 13 and January 25, 2015 .
Annu Palakunnathu Matthew's work explores and challenges our perception of identity, photography and memory. She enlivens old black and white, or sepia toned photos through a surprising and skillful technique of digital manipulation that preserves the background while adding figures of herself or others. With this body of work, Ms. Matthew challenges our perceptions of time and collective memory, while also asking us to look with new eyes at the much cherished family photograph, especially those that were perhaps brought to this country by our immigrant grandparents. Additionally, by replacing static images with animations that are displayed on iPads and inserted into an old book or picture frames, Matthew adds surprise, an inverted dimension of time and contemporary interpretation into a traditional form of media.
As part of our commitment to community engagement, we will have a photo booth taking professional photographs of any three generations of woman from the same immigrant family during AHA! Night on Thursday , December 11 from 6 to 8 pm . Through these portraits, the artist wants to create work that both depict the changing face of American immigration and also chronicles the continual renewal of American diversity. The visitors can bring the whole family and get a print to take home. Learn more at tinyurl.com/immigrantphoto .

- Description: TOPIC: Mitigation of GPS Spoofing Attacks on Civilian Surface Transportation
ABSTRACT: Global Positioning System (GPS), operated by the U.S. government, provides positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services free of charge to users around the world. GPS consists of three parts working in conjunction to deliver PNT data worldwide. The Space Segment is comprised of a constellation of 24 satellites transmitting data containing position and time information to the receivers on the ground; The Control Segment is made up of monitoring and command stations on the ground which control and maintain the satellites in space; The User Segment includes the users and GPS receivers on earth that utilize the data from the satellites signals and computes 3D position and current time. GPS satellites transmit two main categories of signals: one encrypted signal for military use and one unencrypted for civilian use. GPS has become an essential element of global information infrastructure with endless applications in nearly every sector worldwide. The U.S. no longer monopolizes global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in orbit. Other nations are racing to bring their own GNSS to widespread use: Europes Galileo, Russias GLONASS, and China Compass or BeiDou-2, just to name a few.
Although GPS is commonly used in safety applications for surface transportation, it is by no means a secure system. Societys reliance on GPS has attracted the attention of malicious parties to tamper with the unprotected civilian signals. Adversaries can launch spoofing attacks, fooling the receiver with false information about location, timing, and other factors. These attacks are relatively simplistic, inexpensive, and can be detrimental to ordinary GPS users as well as to homeland security. Current defense technology for civilian GPS is in its infancy. Traditional wireless security schemes are impractical in GPS applications, and a systematic analysis has become very important.
This thesis work starts with modeling and characterizing GPS spoofing from a system perspective. The attack model explores various scenarios to analyze every vulnerable aspect of civilian GPS. The feasibility of successful GPS spoofing attacks is researched based upon results obtained through experimentation under secure and controlled circumstance on approved equipment to assure no ill-intention or real harm to the society. The aim is to determine the best course of action for a defense scheme.
The defense scheme focuses on the authentication of GPS signals. Design alternatives are explored through simulation. An innovative authentication protocol for civilian GPS on surface transportation is proposed, prototyped and tested. The work resulted in a GPS receiver incorporated with Secure Digital (SD) card and microprocessor. Upon receiving GPS signals, an authenticity check is conducted by cross-checking with the logged data in both temporal and spatial differentiations. The validated GPS signals will be used on visual navigation for the end user, or the user will be warned of possible spoofing attacks. Evaluation of the authentication protocol shows the effect of various parameters. The work demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of securing civilian GPS applications by enhancing only the User Segment without the need to modify the Space Segment, enormous economic value.

TOPIC:
Multiscale Modeling of Multi-physics for Nano/Bio/Smart Materials
ABSTRACT:
The rapid development of synthesis and characterization of nano/bio/smart materials as well as unprecedented computational power have brought forth a new era of research in mechanics in which experiments, modeling and simulations are performed side by side to advance the frontier in material science, nanotechnology, and biomedical engineering. In this talk, we will mainly focus on how multiscale modeling of multi-physics (thermal-mechanical-electromagnetic coupling) can be used to predict material properties, discover new functionalities of new emerging materials, and eventually design materials for advanced engineering applications. As we know, different theory should be adopted at different length scale. Molecular Dynamics has established itself as a widely employed discipline for the study of material behaviors at atomic level when the material body is viewed as a collection of discrete particles, while continuum theories powered by Finite Element Method have been used to explain and predict various physical phenomena at continuum level. The proposed concurrent multiscale material modeling bridges the gap between these two approaches. New applications fields, including smart nanomaterials with multi-functionalities serving as nano-sensor/harvester, the natural/pathological growth of living matters (such as tumor growth), and the role that mechanical forces play in tissue and organ development, as well as the outstanding questions that requires further studies in the future are to be discussed.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Jiaoyan (Jenny) Li received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Dalian University of Technology and Xi'an Jiaotong University, respectively. She is currently working toward her Ph.D. degree in the Multiscale Material Modeling Laboratory, and also servers as a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The George Washington University. Her research area is in computational and theoretical solid mechanics with focuses on nanomechanics of smart nanomaterial system, biomechanics and modeling of mechanobiology, and advances of microcontinuum physics.

- Description: TOPIC: Wireless Underground Sensing: A Semi-Passive RFID Smart Sensor Node Design
ABSTRACT:
Current radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging methods are not applicable to all scopes and applications due to design limitations. The RFID tags are often used in system inventorying and cold-storage monitoring applications without the option to expand upon the wireless nodes operation. In this thesis, we present a designed and developed underground semi-passive RFID smart sensor node which utilizes four sensors to monitor its surrounding environment. Hardware and software additions are discussed, which offer improvements over current technology by providing moisture, temperature, pressure, and deflection sensing capabilities along with data logging at user-specified intervals.
The sensor node presented was developed in relation to the United States (US) Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology grant (OASRTRS-14-H-UMDA). The research grant supports development of wired and wireless sensor nodes and support sub-systems for use in frost/thaw forecast modeling and a decision support system.

SPEAKER:
Dr. Shafigh Mehraeen, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
TOPIC:
The Role of Molecular Elasticity in Biopolymers Behavior and Protein Self-Assembly
ABSTRACT:
Molecular structure of many polymers including biopolymers creates elastic rigidity that impacts polymers behavior. Understanding this impact is critical to address the physics describing variety of single-molecule experiments and biological processes. In this talk, utilizing analytical theories and numerical methods, I illustrate the effect of molecular elasticity on the behavior of single molecules employed in tethered-bead single-molecule experiments as well as the morphology of assemblages in protein self-assembly processes.
Tethered-bead single-molecule experiments, using optical and magnetic tweezers, are employed to characterize thermodynamics and kinetics of biomolecules such as DNA and RNA during biomolecular processes. In these experiments, I address the effect of thermal fluctuation, focusing on the equilibrium statistical behavior of specific class of underling single molecules, which act as semiflexible polymers, to gain insight into the physics governing their behavior. To demonstrate the role that molecular elasticity plays in protein self-assembly processes, I focus on clathrin protein, a protein recruited by the cell wall for ingesting food particles during endocytosis. I demonstrate that molecular elasticity and binding affinity have a significant impact on the versatile equilibrium and nonequilibrium assemblages occurred in clathrin protein self-assembly process. These results are essential in guiding experiments utilizing clathrin proteins in biotemplating for self-assembly of nanostructures.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Shafigh Mehraeen is currently working as Postdoctoral Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is currently working on developing theoretical models to predict directed self-assembly of nanoparticles, explore anomalies in reactive and diffusive systems, and predict energy loss mechanisms of charge generation and transport within light-harvesting systems. He received his doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. His doctoral research addressed on the role of molecular elasticity in biopolymers and protein self-assembly. His research interests are focused on developing theoretical models and analytical methods to understand driving mechanisms in (directed) self-assembly and charge transport phenomena in nanosciences..
