Abstract:
With a global human population of over 7.3 billion, demand for new and sustainable sources of food is forcing us to look to the ocean. We are becoming increasingly aware of the ways that industrialized fishing are affecting marine ecosystems, systems that are simultaneously under pressure due to climate change. At the same time, we are globally pursuing increased food production capacity through aquaculture. To sustainably manage both fisheries and aquaculture, we must gain a deeper understanding of the processes and mechanisms underlying the way that these exploited species and populations adapt to change, and interact with other components of the marine ecosystem.
The major objective of my research is to identify and understand processes and mechanisms by which populations adapt and change, and how our marine food production systems interact with the broader marine ecosystem. My research focuses on invertebrate (particularly shellfish) fisheries and aquaculture; a useful model system because the adult (exploited) phase of the life cycle tends to be sessile, whilst the larval stages are mobile and highly dispersive. Additionally, shellfish are often considered important ecosystem components because of their role as filter feeders and ecosystem engineers that alter or provide habitat for other species. As human populations grow and pressure on our coastal and marine ecosystems for food and other resources expand, it will become increasingly important to understand how marine populations are connected and how they respond to change. I will share some examples of results of research in my lab as they pertain to sustainable management of industries such as fisheries and aquaculture, planning marine protected areas, and predicting impacts of climate change.
