  • Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines
  • Location: Star Store, New Bedford , Purchase Street, New Bedford
  • Cost: Free admission
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: The Exhibition "Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines" at UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents three very different, yet highly compatible women artists. While each of them uses strong, intense colors and the layering of various elements and lines, each artist's work is best described by one of the three words in the exhibition title. However, the almost psychedelic interpretation of colors in Friese's landscapes, the inclusion of photography or other unusual materials in Mandle's critical narratives and the underlying geometry and references to female imagery in Thorton's flowers all share an affinity towards abstraction while inspiring visitors to look closer to discover their inner logic.

  • PhD Thesis Presentation and Defense by Menglong Yu (UMD-UML joint PhD Program), Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Location: Claire T. Carney Library , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: Chemistry & Biochemistry Department
  • Description: TO: Faculty and Students FROM: Dr. Sivappa Rasapalli SUBJECT: CHM PhD Thesis Presentation (UMD-UML joint PhD Program) BY: Menglong Yu TOPIC: Design and development of facile synthetic access to medicinally important heterocyclic and macrocyclic compounds DATE: November 17th, 2015 TIME: 1:30 PM PLACE: UMD Library 240 (screened at Olney 518 UML campus) ABSTRACT: One of the initial steps in the development of therapeutic agents is the identification of lead compounds that bind to the drug target of interest. Nature provides us with many complex natural products that possess interesting biomedicinal properties. Unfortunately, these sought-after materials are usually isolated in low quantities, making their development into useful medicines difficult. The overarching theme of this thesis work is to design and develop facile synthetic access to such biologically important complex heterocyclic and macrocyclic natural and unnatural products. Our synthetic studies towards saxitoxin and its analogues for neuro-medicinal applications, development of strategies for assembling oxacyclic ansamycins for identification of novel anti-biotic leads, and benzylidine heterocycles for photophormcological applications will be presented. NOTE: All the CHM Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. This show features work by all Fine Arts faculty alongside select works by their students in the media areas of Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture. This exhibition is based on the idea that the best teachers are those who are deeply involved in pursuing a personal art form, subject, or medium. Students, in turn, grasp this passion and grow to become strong, inspired artists in their own right. This is one of the most rewarding experiences in academia. The mission of the Department of Fine Arts is to maintain an environment where artists are committed to the pursuit of teaching, research, and creative work. This faculty of professional artists provides a high-quality studio education to students at the foundation, undergraduate, and graduate levels through formal, aesthetic, technical, and intellectual training. Faculty members prepare students to become creative artists, pursue graduate study, or engage in Fine Arts-related professions through the attainment of their BFA and MFA degrees. The closing reception for the "Igniting the Passion II" exhibition will be held on Tuesday, December 8th, from 4 pm to 6 pm with artist talks at 5pm. • Description: Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) and Engineering Applied Science (EAS) Seminar TIME: 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. LOCATION: Textile Building, Room 101E SPEAKER: Dr. Alireza Asadpoure, Assistant Professor of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at UMass Dartmouth TOPIC: Topology Optimization for Structural Engineering and Architected Materials Design ABSTRACT: The powerful technique of topology optimization is the perfect tool for the optimal design of structures, as it allows variation of material layout’s boundaries and connectivity to achieve exceptional performance. However, solutions obtained by performing the optimization in a deterministic setting may be suboptimal under real-world engineering conditions subject to inherent variabilities (e.g., manufacturing defects and uncertainties on operating conditions). In this presentation, we will propose a novel computational methodology for topology optimization in the presence of uncertainties associated with structural stiffness, with the overarching goal of minimizing the influence of stochastic variabilities on the topology-optimized solutions (robust topology optimization). Notably, the general technique of topology optimization can also be applied for optimal design of architected materials. As an example, a novel algorithm will be presented for the systematic design of lightweight cellular materials that are optimally tailored for ideal combinations of high stiffness, low density, and high energy absorption under vibrations. Classic homogenization theory is utilized to model the effective stiffness of the microstructure, and the Bloch-Floquet approach allows calculation of its damping capacity. We will show that some of the architectures identified by the proposed topology optimization algorithm outperform any existing materials on the suggested figure of merit. BIO: Dr. Asadpoure has recently joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Before joining UMass Dartmouth, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the Mechanics of Materials and Structures group in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. He received his Ph.D. in structural engineering from the Department of Civil Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University. His research experience and interests are in the field of computational mechanics with emphasis on stochastic modeling and optimization of complex systems and materials. His recent work focuses on developing a computational framework for design of architected materials for different performance metrics including weight, stiffness, and energy absorption. • BMEBT Seminar Presentation by Dr. Philip A. Lessard, Project Mgr. at Agrivida, Inc.
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: BMEBT Seminar Series
  • Description: TOPIC: A NEW GENERATOIN OF ENZYMES FOR ANIMAL NUTRITION ABSTRACT:Global demand for high-quality dietary protein is driving the expansion of livestock production. The sustainability of chicken, egg, and pork production, in particular, depend on the development of nutritionally balanced animal feeds. The largest components of animal feed are agricultural products such as corn and soy, which provide macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins and oils, as well as micronutrients, such as minerals and vitamins. However, even feed that contains all of the required nutrients may be nutritionally deficient because many nutrients are present in forms that make them difficult to digest or absorb by the animal. To compensate, a grower must either overformulate a diet (e.g. increase the amount of protein present to make up for the portion that is not well absorbed) or add nutrients from alternative and often more expensive sources. In contrast, adding enzymes to animal feed is a strategy that allows the animals to extract more nutritional value from feed by allowing them to digest and absorb more of the nutrients that are already present in feed. This approach improves feed efficiency, reduces waste and ameliorates agricultural pollution. BRIEF BIO: Dr. Lessard is a Project Manager at Agrivida, Inc., where he oversees the Biochemistry Department's efforts to develop novel traits for improving feed and energy crops. Dr. Lessard joined Agrivida after 14 years as a Research Scientist, Instructor, Principal Investigator and Fellow of the Cambridge-MIT Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At MIT he ran the Microbial Genetics Project Lab, and his research in the areas of microbial genetics, bioprocess development, and plant molecular biology resulted in over two dozen publications and 5 patents. Prior to joining MIT, Dr. Lessard was a post-doctoral associate in New Products Division at Monsanto Company, where he helped to develop traits for crop improvement. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology and Biomedical Sciences with an emphasis in Plant Biology from Washington University in St. Louis.
