  • Location: Star Store, New Bedford , Purchase Street, New Bedford
  • Cost: Free admission
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: The Exhibition "Counterpoints: Colors, Layers, Lines" at UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery in New Bedford presents three very different, yet highly compatible women artists. While each of them uses strong, intense colors and the layering of various elements and lines, each artist's work is best described by one of the three words in the exhibition title. However, the almost psychedelic interpretation of colors in Friese's landscapes, the inclusion of photography or other unusual materials in Mandle's critical narratives and the underlying geometry and references to female imagery in Thorton's flowers all share an affinity towards abstraction while inspiring visitors to look closer to discover their inner logic.

  • Formidable: Site Specific Installation by Kat Knutsen
  • Location: Star Store, New Bedford , Purchase Street, New Bedford
  • Cost: Free admission.
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) presents a new site-specific installation by recent MFA graduate Kat Knutsen, entitled "Formidable" through November 12, 2015. After receiving her MFA in painting at UMass Dartmouth in 2014, Kat Knutsen (born 1984) began an artist residency at CVPA's Star Store Campus focusing on combining fiber arts and painting in her animations. Her work has since evolved towards installations that combine fiber art, painting, sculpture and music. As she says, "I keep an open mind with the materials I work with and explore the relationships between them. At the moment, my work is a conversation between the two-dimensional, three-dimensional and sound. 'Formidable' is a culmination of my experiences since I arrived in New Bedford in 2012. For me, the object of the jellyfish symbolizes the need to quickly adapt in the changing art world. The challenge of creating a dialogue between the textile objects, painting and music in this site-specific installation parallels my journey in building a career as a young artist today."

Viaje Al Hilo is a traveling exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Boston, at UMass Dartmouth Star Store Campus (Crapo Gallery & Lecture Hall). Designed by young Mexican textile designer Marisol Centeno for her Bi Yuu brand, these rugs tell many stories, weaving together the traditional and the contemporary, expressing the inspiration and emotion through a careful combination of color, texture and form. Bi Yuu works with extraordinary artisans from Teotitlan del Valle, designing and implementing a collaborative working method. Marisol Centeno (Mexico City, 1985) studied textile design at the Universidad Iberoamericana. Her work blends artisan craft and principles of contemporary design. In 2012, she founded Bi Yuu, a brand specializing in rugs and woven goods with a strong ethic of social responsibility and an aesthetic vision that combines quality with cutting edge design. The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The exhibition Paper Unleashed: Materials in Art Education celebrates the most basic of materials that can be used in almost any context, educational or creative setting. This exhibition endeavors to explore the many ways in which paper can be used to create a variety of art forms while supporting corresponding teaching methodologies. The exhibition will feature an artist talk by Barbara Pagh, who has been working with handmade paper since the 1970s. She enjoys being able to control the size, color and texture of the paper, explorations that led to the creation of three-dimensional forms to be assembled into installation pieces. Ms. Pagh will discuss her inspiration for the works in paper, with an emphasis on the results of sabbatical projects where she worked to interpret megalithic sites in Scotland, Ireland and Brittany. A selection of elements from the Ireland exhibition, Passages will be on view. The artist talk will take place during the reception on Thursday October 29, 2015 at 5 pm. The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The Art Education program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The Art Education program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields.

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement Observations of Dye Dispersion in the Seasonal Pycnocline Miles A. Sundermeyer Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences School for Marine Science and Technology UMass Dartmouth Wednesday, October 28, 2015 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm SMAST I, Room 204 706 S. Rodney French Blvd., New Bedford, MA Abstract: Dye release experiments conducted in the seasonal pycnocline of the Sargasso Sea were used to estimate diapycnal and isopycnal diffusivities on time scales of many days, and spatial scales of 0.1 to 10 km. Analysis of dye distributions using a shear-strain-diffusion model suggests vertical shear dispersion by low frequency shears and internal waves explain a fraction of the observed lateral spreading. However, higher resolution observations in both time and space are needed to better understand what other processes are driving the observed dispersion. A series of shorter (~6 hrs) experiments surveyed using airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) reveal details about the short-term evolution of the dye patches, including multiple instances of sinuous meanders of the patches early in the evolution, and/or evidence of filamentation along their periphery. This suggests weak small-scale (<1 km) differential lateral advection acting on the patches, possibly contributing to enhanced dispersion at later times in the longer experiments. Simple scaling implies an upper bound on the effective lateral diffusivity at the <1 km scale that is nearly an order of magnitude smaller than that at 1-5 km scales. These results suggest that significant insight can be gained using airborne remote sensing techniques in concert with traditional ship-based methods.

Additionally, the company contributes to the artisan's local economy, utilizing local working methods and raw material from the area with the long and proud Oaxacan textile. Currently, Bi Yuu offers six collections and collaborates with 20 artisans. Marisol participated in the Social Design Roundtable as well as the Second Conference of Collaborative Design Practices, organized by Ana Elena Mallet at CaSa in Oaxaca. She has exhibited widely at venues including: Zona Maco Contemporary Art Fair, the Rufino Tamayo Museum, CENART, and the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City. In 2013, she was recognized as the "Best Designer" in the "Hand Made" category by the magazine CASAVIVA. Her work has been published in Folio, Wallpaper, Elle Decor, Architectural Digest and Código.
