Thousands and thousands of girl students attended art academies right after the Civil War to meet growing industrial and cultural demand for illustrators, engravers, printmakers, miniaturists and portrait painters, but only Mary Cassatt and Georgia O'Keefe are part of the art historical canon. Modernist critics and historians have often dismissed women's representational art because they privilege formalist invention over pictorial illusionism. Because of their focus on the individual fine artist, artistic style and elite patronage, such critics and historians have often ignored the importance of commercial illustration, printmaking, and traditional craft. UMass Dartmouth's Art History Department and its upperclassmen address this premise in its exhibition, "Women Artists: Transforming the Community (Providence to Provincetown 1880 - 1940)," which runs from April 12 to April 30. The exhibition is a collaborative project whereby students work in teams and apply their academic and professional knowledge to a real world experience. This is the 5th year that art history professors Dr. Anna Dempsey and Allison J. Cywin have directed a group of upperclassmen to execute a professional museum-quality exhibition and publication. This student-run exhibition explores the definition of modernity and focuses on feminine artistic communities that extend from Providence to Provincetown. The women artists represented in the exhibition are Blanche Lazzell, Lucy L'Engle, Agnes Weinrich, Ethel Mars, Maud Squire, Grace Albee, Eliza D. Gardiner, Jessie Willcox Smith, Frances Gifford, Sarah Eddy, Sarah Wyman Whitman, Mabel Woodward, Alice Barbara Stephens, Blanche Ames Ames and Allen Sisters, among others. Night, April 14 at 7 pm The UMass Dartmouth 2016 MFA Thesis Exhibition is a much anticipated and celebrated annual event showcasing the artwork of graduating students from the College of Visual and Performing Arts. This large-scale exhibition at the Star Store Campus in historic Downtown New Bedford consists of a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, digital and moving images, software application design, as well as intricately made jewelry that utilizes both text and unusual contemporary materials. The range of themes is equally diverse; explorations of personal and cultural identity, feelings of loss, intimacy, memories and dreams as well as examinations of formal and conceptual space. The 2016 exhibition includes the creative efforts of 18 UMass Dartmouth MFA degree candidates in the visual arts: Alec H. Andersen, Amy Araujo, Calvin Arterberry, Kendra Conn, Kelly Lynn Daniels, Yinan Dong, Meaghan Gates, Marcia Goodwin, Kyungsun "Ariel" Lee, John A. Middleton, Mark Phelan, Sara Allen Prigodich, Cuong Abel Sy, Brett Sylvia, Andrew Tedesco, William M. Vanaria, Lillian E. Webster, and Will Wolf. 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM	Workshop: Techniques for Active Learning in the Classroom Location: CCB 115 Contact: Office of Faculty Development Description: By Chris Brigham, Vijaya Chalvendra Sometimes, a student can lose focus even during the best lectures. Using techniques that promote student engagement can help keep the focus on the lecture topic. I have instituted a number of techniques in my classes. Promoting discussion both with other students and you the instructor can promote active and attentive learning. Also, giving students the opportunity for feedback every class can help the instructor respond and clarify points that were unclear, as well as help the instructor to alter the lesson in real time. There are also several ways technology can be used for a more engaged classroom. I use these techniques in my Bioengineering classes, but I believe these can be adapted for any discipline. In my experience, promoting discussion, giving the opportunity for feedback, and going beyond the 50-minute or 75-minute lecture has been rewarding for both me and the students. Some of the techniques to be discussed: think/pair/share, minute paper, app-based clickers, flipped classroom. While-thousands and thousands of girl students-attended art academies right after the Civil War to meet growing industrial and cultural demand for illustrators, engravers, printmakers, miniaturists and portrait painters, only Mary Cassatt and Georgia O'Keefe are part of the art historical canon. Modernist critics and historians have often dismissed women's representational art because they privilege formalist invention over pictorial illusionism. Because of their focus on the individual fine artist, artistic style and elite patronage, such critics and historians have often ignored the importance of commercial illustration, printmaking, and traditional craft. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's Art History Department and its upperclassmen address this premise in its upcoming exhibition entitled, Women Artists: Transforming the Community (Providence to Provincetown 1880 - 1940) which runs from April 12 to April 30, 2016. The exhibition is a collaborative project whereby students work in teams and apply their academic and professional knowledge to a real world experience. This is the 5th year that art history professors Dr. Anna Dempsey and Allison J. Cywin have directed a group of upperclassmen to execute a professional museum-quality exhibition and publication. Moisander Assistant Professor Department of Biology University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday, April 20, 2016 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm SMAST I, Room 204 706 S. Rodney French Blvd New Bedford, MA Abstract: Marine copepods (Arthropoda) are an important part of the marine food webs, serving as a major food source for fish larvae and other larger zooplankton. The nature and variability in composition and function of microbial communities present in association of copepods are currently not well understood. Our recent studies suggest that bacterial communities on copepods contain distinct stable and transient components, and these bacteria are likely to play a range of roles in marine biogeochemical cycles and food webs. We detected nitrogen (N2) fixation rates and N2 fixing bacteria on copepods collected from the coastal waters of the North Atlantic Ocean; some of these were N2-fixing Vibrio spp. that appear to maintain stable associations on copepods. Other potentially N2-fixing bacteria, including deltaproteobacterial groups and cyanobacterial N2 fixers that are symbiotic with eukaryotic phytoplankton, appear to end up in the copepods via copepod feeding on detrital material and live cells. These results and additional work conducted using high throughput sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene from copepods collected from the temperate North Atlantic coastal waters and the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre, suggest that feeding status plays a major role in controlling the copepod microbiome composition at any given time. In addition, our recent collaborative studies using stable isotope rate measurements and molecular analyses, detected other active nitrogen cycle transformations on copepod associations in both subtropical and temperate North Atlantic waters. The results suggest that if by-passing the protist-driven microbial loop, the bacteria associated with copepod food form an unconventional link in the marine food webs, thus potentially re-directing the path of carbon at the base of the marine food webs. Specific metabolic activities of the microbiome on copepods are also contributing to biogeochemical transformations of nitrogen in the surface layers of the ocean. The first man was stabbed and left for dead by a skinhead at a bus stop in Milan. Passersby ignored him for more than an hour. The other two were randomly shot by a radical right-wing thug who hunted down and murdered two other Senagalese men on the streets of Florence in 2011, and then committed suicide. Thousands and thousands of girl students attended art academies right after the Civil War to meet growing industrial and cultural demand for illustrators, engravers, printmakers, miniaturists and portrait painters, but only Mary Cassatt and Georgia O'Keefe are part of the art historical canon. Modernist critics and historians have often dismissed women's representational art because they privilege formalist invention over pictorial illusionism. Because of their focus on the individual fine artist, artistic style and elite patronage, such critics and historians have often ignored the importance of commercial illustration, printmaking, and traditional craft. UMass Dartmouth's Art History Department and its upperclassmen address this premise in its exhibition, "Women Artists: Transforming the Community (Providence to Provincetown 1880 - 1940)," which runs from April 12 to April 30. The exhibition is a collaborative project whereby students work in teams and apply their academic and professional knowledge to a real world experience. This is the 5th year that art history professors Dr. Anna Dempsey and Allison J. Cywin have directed a group of upperclassmen to execute a professional museum-quality exhibition and publication. This student-run exhibition explores the definition of modernity and focuses on feminine artistic communities that extend from Providence to Provincetown. The women artists represented in the exhibition are Blanche Lazzell, Lucy L'Engle, Agnes Weinrich, Ethel Mars, Maud Squire, Grace Albee, Eliza D. Gardiner, Jessie Willcox Smith, Frances Gifford, Sarah Eddy, Sarah Wyman Whitman, Mabel Woodward, Alice Barbara Stephens, Blanche Ames Ames and Allen Sisters, among others. Interestingly, when the type of negative emotion was controlled for, only disgust images were found to correspond to over-reproductions of time, while fear images were found to correspond to under-reproductions of time. Externally- versus internally-focused attention may account for these different effects, however, a better understanding of the effects of different types of negative emotion on time perception is needed. The contingent negative variance (CNV), an event-related potential (ERP), has been found to fluctuate with over- and under-reproductions of time. In the current study, participants (n = 36) completed a time reproduction task that presented high and low arousing angry, disgust, and fear faces, as well as neutral faces at different durations. High-density, 64-channel EEG was recorded during the task to test CNV effects. A significant main effect for emotion was found such that fearful faces elicited larger CNV amplitudes compared to angry and disgust faces (p<.05). A significant main effect of presentation duration was found, such that shorter (400ms) intervals elicited larger CNV amplitudes than 600ms and 800ms intervals (pâ€™s<.05). These data support previous research that has found different negative emotions to have different effects on time perception; however, the direction of the effect conflicts previous findings. Possible theoretical accounts for these findings will be discussed. 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM	BMEBT Doctoral Dissertation Defense / BMEBT Seminar by Siddhartha Maiti Location: Textiles Building 101E Contact: BMEBT PHD Program Description: TITLE: DEVELOPING FLUORESCENT SENSORS FOR THE BIOIMAGING OF CHELATABLE IRON (II) IONS Abstract: Therapeutic agents, in order to reach their target, frequently need to cross epithelial and endothelial sheets. Two routes are available for such purpose: the transcellular and the paracellular pathways. The former is employed by lipophilic drugs and by molecules selectively transported by channels, pumps and carriers present in the plasma membrane. Hydrophilic molecules cannot cross biological membranes, therefore their transepithelial transport could be significantly enhanced if they moved through the paracellular pathway. Transit through this route is regulated by tight junctions (TJs). The discovery in recent years of the molecular mechanisms of the TJ has allowed the design of different methods to open the paracellular route in a reversible manner. One such method is the use of chemical entities called bioenhancers, to promote and augment the bioavailability of the drugs which are mixed with them without exhibiting any synergistic effects. The need of the hour is to carry out extensive research on these bioenhancers so that they could be utilized in the drug formulations. In this study we present the preliminary understanding of two different candidates, which have the potential to be used as a bioenhancer for hydrophilic molecules by enhancing paracellular transportation. Our first candidate was a type of herbally prepared silver nanoparticle (rajath bhasma), used in the ancient system of Ayurveda for several centuries as a part of a concoction including a mixture of medicinal herbs to treat a wide array of illnesses. The other candidate that was considered was an 80kDa novel botulinum neurotoxin type E (BoNT/E) neurotoxin associated proteins (P-80). In this work, we characterize structure and function of these candidates by using chemical, biochemical and biophysical techniques. In vitro studies indicated morphological and biochemical changes in epithelial cells upon treatment with these candidates. Proteomic approach in combination with a literature-based pathway analysis showed altered expression of enzymes associated with the regulating integrity of tight junction. The bioehancing potential of these candidates were further validated by using an in vitro model to examine the paracellular transport of a co-incubated therapeutic molecule. The findings of this study could be used as foundational tool for designing a new generation of bioenhancers resulting in higher efficacy of therapeutic molecules. Thousands and thousands of girl students attended art academies right after the Civil War to meet growing industrial and cultural demand for illustrators, engravers, printmakers, miniaturists and portrait painters, but only Mary Cassatt and Georgia O'Keefe are part of the art historical canon. Modernist critics and historians have often dismissed women's representational art because they privilege formalist invention over pictorial illusionism. Because of their focus on the individual fine artist, artistic style and elite patronage, such critics and historians have often ignored the importance of commercial illustration, printmaking, and traditional craft. UMass Dartmouth's Art History Department and its upperclassmen address this premise in its exhibition, "Women Artists: Transforming the Community (Providence to Provincetown 1880 - 1940)," which runs from April 12 to April 30. The exhibition is a collaborative project whereby students work in teams and apply their academic and professional knowledge to a real world experience. This is the 5th year that art history professors Dr. Anna Dempsey and Allison J. Cywin have directed a group of upperclassmen to execute a professional museum-quality exhibition and publication. This student-run exhibition explores the definition of modernity and focuses on feminine artistic communities that extend from Providence to Provincetown. The women artists represented in the exhibition are Blanche Lazzell, Lucy L'Engle, Agnes Weinrich, Ethel Mars, Maud Squire, Grace Albee, Eliza D. Gardiner, Jessie Willcox Smith, Frances Gifford, Sarah Eddy, Sarah Wyman Whitman, Mabel Woodward, Alice Barbara Stephens, Blanche Ames Ames and Allen Sisters, among others. This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of the arts community, including Julie Heller Gallery of Provincetown, Bert Gallery of Providence, Portsmouth Free Public Library, Smith College's Sophia Smith Archive, University of Massachusetts Amherst Archive and Special Collection, Providence Art Club, Providence Athenaeum, New Bedford Whaling Museum, and private collectors. Night, April 14 at 7 pm The UMass Dartmouth 2016 MFA Thesis Exhibition is a much anticipated and celebrated annual event showcasing the artwork of graduating students from the College of Visual and Performing Arts. This large-scale exhibition at the Star Store Campus in historic Downtown New Bedford consists of a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, digital and moving images, software application design, as well as intricately made jewelry that utilizes both text and unusual contemporary materials. The range of themes is equally diverse; explorations of personal and cultural identity, feelings of loss, intimacy, memories and dreams as well as examinations of formal and conceptual space. The 2016 exhibition includes the creative efforts of 18 UMass Dartmouth MFA degree candidates in the visual arts: Alec H. Andersen, Amy Araujo, Calvin Arterberry, Kendra Conn, Kelly Lynn Daniels, Yinan Dong, Meaghan Gates, Marcia Goodwin, Kyungsun "Ariel" Lee, John A.
