  • Description: Location: DION Building - Room 114 Second Presenter: Mr. Yongbo Zeng, Ph.D. Student, University of Rhode Island Topic: Online Social Networks Privacy Study through TAPE Framework Abstract: While personal information privacy is threatened by online social networks, researchers are seeking for privacy protection tools and methods to assist online social network users. In this work, we propose a Trust-Aware Privacy Evaluation framework, called TAPE, aiming to address this problem. Under the TAPE framework we investigate how to quantitatively evaluate the privacy risk, as a function of people's awareness of privacy risk as well as whether people can be trusted by their friends to protect others personal information. Simulations are performed to illustrate the key concepts and calculations, as well as the advantages of TAPE. Based on the TAPE framework, we also propose an unfriending strategy in terms of privacy protection, which outperforms other existing unfriending strategies. Biography: Yongbo Zeng received his B.S. degree in Information Security from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), in 2009, and the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Rhode Island, in 2014. He is currently a Ph.D. student of Electrical Engineering at University of Rhode Island. His research interests include reputation system, trust evaluation and online social network privacy. The Seminars is open to the public free of charge. *For further information, please contact Dr. Liudong Xing at 508.999.8883, or by via email at lxing@umassd.edu.

  • Description: One of the great things about Umass Dartmouth is the opportunity to do undergraduate research which has many benefits such as working closely with a faculty member, enhancing your academic knowledge, and gaining credentials that help expand your resume. Also if you are thinking about graduate school undergraduate research is looked at favorably by graduate school admissions. Some students may have the opportunity to publish, or receive a stipends. The Office of Undergraduate Research will be holding and information session here at the CAS-STAR Center LARTS 114 on Thursday April 2nd at 3:30. Food will be available. We hope to see you there so you can learn more about this opportunity.

  • Description: Location: DION Building - Room 114 Third Presenter: Dr. Chaonan Wang, Research Associate, UMass Dartmouth Topic: A Phased-Mission Framework for Communication Reliability in WSN Abstract: In this talk we present a phased-mission framework and develop corresponding algorithms for the communication reliability of wireless sensor networks (WSN). In particular, we identify two types of communication phases in WSN: infrastructure communication phase (ICP) and application communication phase (ACP). Since a complete WSN communication task usually involves one or more ICP and ACP, the WSN communication can be analyzed as a phased-mission system. Besides the difficulties in the reliability analysis of traditional phased-mission system, the dynamic structure during the ACP brings new challenges to our study. Under the proposed phased-mission framework, we develop binary decision diagram-based evaluation algorithms for K-coverage guaranteed WSN communication reliability. Both bidirectional and unidirectional communication links are considered. The proposed algorithms have no limitation on the type of to time- -failure distributions for the network components. Case studies are given to illustrate the application of the proposed algorithms. Biography: Chaonan Wang received the B.E. degree in Electric Power and Automatic Engineering from Shanghai University of Electric Power, Shanghai, China, in 2006, the M.E. degree in the Institute of Microelectronic from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2009, and the Ph.D. in the Electrical Computer Engineering from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, USA, in 2014. She is currently a Research Associate and part-time lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, North Dartmouth. Her current research interests include reliability analysis and performance evaluation of complex systems and networks. The Seminars is open to the public free of charge. *For further information, please contact Dr. Liudong Xing at 508.999.8883, or by via email at lxing@umassd.edu.
