  • Description: UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts presents Together: Junior Artists of the Department of Visual Design Featuring recent student work from Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography Exhibition Dates: 3/2- 4/1 Reception: Tuesday, March 3rd, 4 pm to 6 pm Artist Talk at 5 pm during the reception, titled Re.Membered: The Art of Collaboration The UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts is pleased to present the third annual Together: Junior Artists of the Department of Visual Design on display from March 2 through April 1, 2015. The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 4 to 6 pm, with the Artist Talk, presented by students of both Design and Art History at 5 pm. This exhibition features recent work from students in Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography, along with a slide show of these same young artists engaged in activities and processes relative to their CVPA experience. The Department of Visual Design is a cluster of professionally-oriented options: Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography. • Description: Born in Havana, Carlos Eire, PhD, is a national award-winning author and Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University. His books include "Waiting for Snow in Miami," which won the 2003 National Book Award for Nonfiction, and a second memoir published in 2011, "Learning to Die in Miami." Carlos Eire was just 11 years old when he and his brother were among 14,000 children airlifted out of Castro's Cuba in the 1960s without their parents. Professor Eire chronicles his early boyhood in Cuba and his struggle to adjust to life in the U.S. as a teenager on his own. Be inspired by his very moving story. Visual design is an art form, a craft, and a means of information dissemination for education, business, commerce, editorial and entertainment industries. Students earning their BFA in one of these four areas explore visual communication in the widest sense, employing both traditional (analog) and contemporary electronic and computer technologies. The examples in this exhibition demonstrate that our broadly educated student visual artists/designers are both literate and articulate and capable of participating on many levels of a wide variety of projects. Bringing together both print and digital media, this exhibition provides insight into how Junior students use visual design as a method of communication. • Description: Location: DION Building - Room 114 Third Presenter: Dr. Chaonan Wang, Research Associate, UMass Dartmouth Topic: A Phased-Mission Framework for Communication Reliability in WSN Abstract: In this talk we present a phased-mission framework and develop corresponding algorithms for the communication reliability of wireless sensor networks (WSN). In particular, we identify two types of communication phases in WSN: infrastructure communication phase (ICP) and application communication phase (ACP). Since a complete WSN communication task usually involves one or more ICP and ACP, the WSN communication can be analyzed as a phased-mission system. Besides the difficulties in the reliability analysis of traditional phased-mission system, the dynamic structure during the ACP brings new challenges to our study. Under the proposed phased-mission framework, we develop binary decision diagram-based evaluation algorithms for K-coverage guaranteed WSN communication reliability. Both bidirectional and unidirectional communication links are considered. The proposed algorithms have no limitation on the type of to time- -failure distributions for the network components. Case studies are given to illustrate the application of the proposed algorithms. Biography: Chaonan Wang received the B.E. degree in Electric Power and Automatic Engineering from Shanghai University of Electric Power, Shanghai, China, in 2006, the M.E. degree in the Institute of Microelectronic from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2009, and the Ph.D. in the Electrical Computer Engineering from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, USA, in 2014. She is currently a Research Associate and part-time lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, North Dartmouth. Her current research interests include reliability analysis and performance evaluation of complex systems and networks. • Description: Location: DION Building - Room 114 Second Presenter: Mr. Yongbo Zeng, Ph.D. Student, University of Rhode Island Topic: Online Social Networks Privacy Study through TAPE Framework Abstract: While personal information privacy is threatened by online social networks, researchers are seeking for privacy protection tools and methods to assist online social network users. In this work, we propose a Trust-Aware Privacy Evaluation framework, called TAPE, aiming to address this problem. Under the TAPE framework we investigate how to quantitatively evaluate the privacy risk, as a function of people's awareness of privacy risk as well as whether people can be trusted by their friends to protect others personal information. Simulations are performed to illustrate the key concepts and calculations, as well as the advantages of TAPE. Based on the TAPE framework, we also propose an unfriending strategy in terms of privacy protection, which outperforms other existing unfriending strategies. Biography: Yongbo Zeng received his B.S. degree in Information Security from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), in 2009, and the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Rhode Island, in 2014. He is currently a Ph.D. student of Electrical Engineering at University of Rhode Island. His research interests include reputation system, trust evaluation and online social network privacy. The Seminars is open to the public free of charge. *For further information, please contact Dr. Liudong Xing at 508.999.8883, or by via email at lxing@umassd.edu.
