Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention. « 2/11 - 2/24 »	Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher / Student Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA Contact: University Art Gallery Description: The CVPA Art Education Department is pleased to present Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher/ Student an exhibition featuring over 70 works created by students currently enrolled in the Master of Art Education (MAE) Program along with MAE alumni and the Pre-K through 12th grade students they currently teach. The gallery is located at the College of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The exhibition Layers of Learning: Artist / Teacher/ Student aims to celebrate the cyclical nature of art education as participants shift from artist, teacher, and student throughout their careers. This exhibition endeavors to explore the variety of stages our students experience throughout their career as well as to highlight their professional achievements and celebrate the work they are doing in their classrooms each day. This juried exhibition features work in a variety of media including painting, photography, mixed media, drawing, digital art, and sculpture. The Art Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth challenges students to be critical thinkers, while developing visual, verbal and written skills, which serve them professionally and personally as discerning individuals living in a community with others. The MAE program is dedicated to increasing the capacity of its graduates to question issues related to teaching, thinking, learning, and producing in and through the visual arts. This program offers a sequence of practical, theoretical, and studio-based experiences through which students build on their knowledge, skills, and confidence as art educators. The MAE program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer initial and professional licensure. The program emphasizes professional development and lifelong learning for teachers who already hold teaching licenses in the arts or related fields. « 2/12 - 3/26 »	The Uncommon Object - University Art Gallery, New Bedford Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA Contact: University Art Gallery Description: For this group exhibition, ten alumni from the renown UMass Dartmouth Ceramics program invited artists who have been influential in a manner contrary to their aesthetic, finding pairings revealing an unusual logic; a connection in uncommon objects. "The Uncommon Object" was conceived by Rebecca Hutchinson and Jim Lawton with the notion that our counterpoint is not only interesting but offers insight into the depth of who we are as artists. The exhibition is part of the programming for the 49th annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference in Providence, RI which has earned a reputation worldwide as a premier event for ceramic art, drawing thousands of participants each year. Contact: > See Description for contact information Description: Israel abounds with strange paradoxes regarding religion and state. On the one hand, a Cohen (descended from the ancient Priestly caste) can't marry a divorcee; a Jew can only be converted by the Orthodox rabbis; wives are at a serious disadvantage in divorce proceedings; Moslems can only get married in their religious Moslem Court system; yeshiva students don't have to serve in the army; etc. On the other hand, pork is sold publicly; gays serve openly in the army and gay "spouses" are even given army pensions; restaurants, cinema houses and many stores are open on the Sabbath; Christmas trees abound in Tel Aviv near the end of each December; women have full equal rights and even serve on local Religious Councils; etc. Is this mere inconsistency or is there a "rationale" (if not altogether logical) here? This talk will discuss and analyze the dynamic changes regarding religion & society -- even while religion & state has remained largely the same. It will conclude with some thoughts regarding the subject and the upcoming elections. All Day	Recording with Camtasia Relay Location: Online Contact: CITS Instructional Development Description: Camtasia Relay is a software based lecture capture and personal recording solution. Relay can record PowerPoint presentations or any other content displayed on your computer screen, in addition to audio narration and web cam video. You can record anywhere, anytime regardless of internet connectivity or location. After recording, the video is automatically processed by the Relay server and uploaded to a cloud based storage provider. Getting Started in myCourses and myCourses Grading offered back-to-back This face-to-face workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the teaching and learning features of (myCourses) Blackboard Learn. You will learn about the roles an instructor plays in the online environment and identify key attributes for success. From there, you will learn how to set up the Course Menu, your students' access point to tools and content, and how to create Content Areas that contain materials, tools, and resources. You will have the opportunity to add a course structure to your development course, allowing you to learn about Blackboard Learn tools and features as you experience them in the course environment. You will become familiar with some common start-up tasks, such as creating announcements, adding a syllabus, adding calendar entries, and setting up assignments Finally, you will view the course as a student to become familiar with how the course environment appears to your own students. As a student, you will learn how to access and navigate through tools and content. In this hands-on workshop participants learn how to set up, organize and manage student records, add columns to the student table to enter grades, export and import grades and manage the grade book settings. Connecting rubrics which detail how students will demonstrate what they have learned through various tasks to individual department assessment plans provides a cohesive rationale for programs. This exhibition endeavors to explore the variety of stages our students experience throughout their career as well as to highlight their professional achievements and celebrate the work they are doing in their classrooms each day. "The Uncommon Object" was conceived by Rebecca Hutchinson and Jim Lawton with the notion that our counterpoint is not only interesting but offers insight into the depth of who we are as artists. The exhibition is part of the programming for the 49th annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference in Providence, RI which has earned a reputation worldwide as a premier event for ceramic art, drawing thousands of participants each year.
