  • Description: This workshop provides a practical introduction to Microsoft Excel. Hands-on practice with Excel allows participants to learn the skills needed to set up a spreadsheet, make keyboard entries, and perform calculations. Participants learn to produce worksheets such as budgets and payrolls. Formatting, using formulas and simple functions are introduced. No previous Excel experience is needed.   • Description: In this course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for both online and blended teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching strategies for both methodologies. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention.   • Description: UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts presents Together: Junior Artists of the Department of Visual Design Featuring recent student work from Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography Exhibition Dates: 3/2- 4/1 Reception: Tuesday, March 3rd, 4 pm to 6 pm Artist Talk at 5 pm during the reception, titled Re.Membered: The Art of Collaboration The UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts is pleased to present the third annual Together: Junior Artists of the Department of Visual Design on display from March 2 through April 1, 2015. The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 4 to 6 pm, with the Artist Talk, presented by students of both Design and Art History at 5 pm. This exhibition features recent work from students in Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography, along with a slide show of these same young artists engaged in activities and processes relative to their CVPA experience. The Department of Visual Design is a cluster of professionally-oriented options: Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography. Visual design is an art form, a craft, and a means of information dissemination for education, business, commerce, editorial and entertainment industries. Students earning their BFA in one of these four areas explore visual communication in the widest sense, employing both traditional (analog) and contemporary electronic and computer technologies. The examples in this exhibition demonstrate that our broadly educated student visual artists/designers are both literate and articulate and capable of participating on many levels of a wide variety of projects. Bringing together both print and digital media, this exhibition provides insight into how Junior students use visual design as a method of communication.   • Description: Did you know nearly 60% of all students do not purchase a textbook at some point in time? The National Association of College Stores (NACS) says the average college student will spend $655 on textbooks each year, but with a single textbook easily costing as much as $300, that total can easily be much higher. In fact, the College Board puts the annual cost of books and materials at $1,168 as noted by Tyler Kingkade of the Huffington Post. Open Educational Resources (OER) are an opportunity for decreasing these costs for our students. Join us for a lunchtime discussion with guest speaker Shannon L. Jenkins, Associate Professor of Political Science and Department Chairperson. The teaching and learning benefits of incorporating these OER instructional materials will be explored. Information on how to get started using OER and creating your own OER will also be presented. Lunch will be provided, Library room 314.

  • Description: For this group exhibition, ten alumni from the renown UMass Dartmouth Ceramics program invited artists who have been influential in a manner contrary to their aesthetic, finding pairings revealing an unusual logic; a connection in uncommon objects. "The Uncommon Object" was conceived by Rebecca Hutchinson and Jim Lawton with the notion that our counterpoint is not only interesting but offers insight into the depth of who we are as artists. The exhibition is part of the programming for the 49th annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference in Providence, RI which has earned a reputation worldwide as a premier event for ceramic art, drawing thousands of participants each year.   • Description: With Protestantism so diverse and changing, who are the evangelicals? What distinguishes evangelical Christianity from mainline Protestant denominations and why the great growth of evangelical Christianity in the last century? Is it global? Is it truly cross-cultural? Is it reasonable? Rev. Dr. Neil Damgaard, Th.M., D.Min. will bring a 30 minute lecture in the large Conference Room in the Charlton College of Business on Wednesday March 11th at noon, followed by a good time for questions and answers that will seek to concisely define and meaningfully define what Christianity is, from an evangelical perspective. Originally from Washington D.C., Dr. Damgaard has been Protestant Chaplain with the UMD Center for Religious and Spiritual Life since 2007, and a supportive friend of UMD for over 31 years. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech and Dallas Theological Seminary (twice). (His wife Renee and daughter Jocelyn are summa cum laud and cum laud graduates of UMD).   • Description: Safe Zone Training is designed to increase awareness, knowledge, and support of LGBTQ people and issues. The training was also established to build a visible support network of LGBTQ Allies at UMass Dartmouth and to improve campus climate for LGBTQ individuals. During the course of this training attendees will participate in activities and be provided with material involving homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism, and cissexism and will learn skills on how to actively support those who identify as LGBTQ regardless of societal oppression. At the end of the training participants will be provided with a sticker to display that they have completed the training and that their office is an LGBTQ Safe Zone on campus. Safe Zone Training is open to Faculty, Staff and Students. Participants must register prior to the training.
