« 2/18 - 3/3 »	Weaving with Light Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA Cost: Free Admission Contact: University Art Gallery Description: Weaving with Light CVPA Campus Gallery Reception: Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 pm with the artist talk at 5 pm UMass Dartmouth College of Visual & Performing Arts faculty and students are presenting their interactive Weaving with Light exhibition, recently showcased at the premier art fair SOFA CHICAGO through March 3, at the University's Campus Gallery. The installation pays tribute to the nearby city of New Bedford and its historical connection to the textile industry. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 p.m. with the artist talk at 5 pm at the gallery. The Weaving With Light exhibition was designed to be highly interactive, enticing visitors to participate in the actual production of cloth, drawing their attention to the making process used by contemporary fiber artists. Within the exhibition, several operational single-person looms are arranged in a semicircle accompanied by the vintage still photos of mill buildings, interiors, and workers to illustrate some of the actual operations and conditions of historic mill life. "Every step of the process has involved the discovery and problem solving aspects of design and making and realizing the full potential of the project through innovative methods, research and observation, material sourcing and testing, and overarching aesthetic decisions," Professor Hamlin said leading up to SOFA CHICAGO. "The students have extended themselves in both their intellectual and physical stamina." The warp yarns that feed each loom rise from the front of the loom to a rattle gathering at the top of the wall. The ascending yarns create the illusion of an enclosed space to emulate the conditions of mill life. Students and faculty traveled to Chicago this past November for the prestigious art exhibition dedicated to Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art (SOFA). Working on the Weaving with Light installation includes MFA Ceramics student Hanna Vogel, MFA Graphic Design student Kate Dickinson, MFA Wood/Furniture Design student John Middleton, MFA Digital Media student Alec Andersen, and BFA Textile Design/Fiber Arts students Tony Beal and Christopher Rogers. The group is being advised by Artisanry Professor James Lawton with assistance from Charlotte Hamlin, who serves as CVPA's coordinator for graduate studies and research, as well as CVPA Professional Technician Shingo Furukawa. UMass Dartmouth was one of six entries selected for prestigious university art exhibition in Chicago, including Illinois Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, San Diego State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Iowa. SOFA CHICAGO ranked #7 in the USA Today Reader's Choice 10 Best Art Events. UMass Dartmouth's CVPA Campus Gallery is located on the first floor of the CVPA Building on the Main Campus (285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA 02747). Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention. Speaker: John Butcher (University of Auckland, New Zealand) Title: "B-series for the analysis of numerical methods" Time: Tuesday, February 23, 2016, 4:00pm-5:00pm Location: Textiles 105 Abstract: B-series have their origin in the study of Runge-Kutta methods. However, they have an important application in the analysis of general linear methods (multistage-multivalue methods). Each input and each stage is represented by a B-series and these are inter-related in terms of the coefficient matrices which define a specific method. In the case of Runge-Kutta methods (one-value methods) this analysis gives the standard conditions in terms of rooted trees and the corresponding elementary weights and tree factorials. 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM	EAS / PHY / CSCVR Seminar by Prof. Gaurav Khanna Location: Textiles Building 105 Contact: EAS Seminar Series Description: TOPIC: GW150914: THE REBIRTH OF GRAVITATIONAL WAVE ASTRONOMY ABSTRACT: The first ever direct detection of gravitational waves from a binary black hole system happened on September 14, 2015. Einstein's general theory of relativity predicted the existence of these waves exactly a century ago but they had never been directly observed until now. With the enormous NSF investment in hardware, data analysis methods and theory, this major success has led to a completely new way to observe and understand the most mysterious astrophysical objects like black holes and neutron stars. In this talk I will introduce the audience to this area and its current and future prospects. I will also comment on the theoretical, mathematical and computational work performed by my research group that contributes significantly towards this effort. The installation pays tribute to the nearby city of New Bedford and its historical connection to the textile industry. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 p.m. with the artist talk at 5 pm at the gallery. The Weaving With Light exhibition was designed to be highly interactive, enticing visitors to participate in the actual production of cloth, drawing their attention to the making process used by contemporary fiber artists. Within the exhibition, several operational single-person looms are arranged in a semicircle accompanied by the vintage still photos of mill buildings, interiors, and workers to illustrate some of the actual operations and conditions of historic mill life. "Every step of the process has involved the discovery and problem solving aspects of design and making and realizing the full potential of the project through innovative methods, research and observation, material sourcing and testing, and overarching aesthetic decisions," Professor Hamlin said leading up to SOFA CHICAGO. "The students have extended themselves in both their intellectual and physical stamina." The warp yarns that feed each loom rise from the front of the loom to a rattle gathering at the top of the wall. The ascending yarns create the illusion of an enclosed space to emulate the conditions of mill life. Students and faculty traveled to Chicago this past November for the prestigious art exhibition dedicated to Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art (SOFA). Working on the Weaving with Light installation includes MFA Ceramics student Hanna Vogel, MFA Graphic Design student Kate Dickinson, MFA Wood/Furniture Design student John Middleton, MFA Digital Media student Alec Andersen, and BFA Textile Design/Fiber Arts students Tony Beal and Christopher Rogers. The group is being advised by Artisanry Professor James Lawton with assistance from Charlotte Hamlin, who serves as CVPA's coordinator for graduate studies and research, as well as CVPA Professional Technician Shingo Furukawa. UMass Dartmouth was one of six entries selected for prestigious university art exhibition in Chicago, including Illinois Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, San Diego State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Iowa. 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM	BMEBT PhD Dissertation Defense/BMEBT Seminar by Manisha Jassal Location: Textiles Building 101E Contact: BMEBT PHD Program Description: TOPIC:USE OF SUB-MICRON SIZED ELECTROSPUN FIBERS TO ENHANCE THE SURFACE FUNCTIONALITY: CHARACTERIZATION AND APPLICATIONS Abstract: Functionalization of polymeric fibers can be used as a multipotent tool to facilitate their application in different research fields such as tissue engineering, drug delivery and ion-exchange. In tissue engineering and drug delivery, biodegradable polymer-based textile structures (woven, knitted, or non-woven) are becoming more popular as their specific chemical composition, mechanical properties and morphological features can be controlled and modified according to the required application. Most bio-inert polymers lack the functional motifs for specific bioactivity; however, functionalization of scaffolds can provide biological functions to actively induce tissue regeneration and promote cell adhesion by targeting specific cell-matrix interactions. Functionalization is also a powerful tool to incorporate specific drug molecules which can then be released in a sustained manner at the target site. In the current study, poly(caprolactone) (PCL) fibers were fabricated by electrospinning, and functionalized through wet chemical techniques that are preferable for complex 3D structure of these fibrous scaffolds. The functionalized electrospun PCL fibers were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Results from this study showed the favorable effect of functionalization on altering cellular behavior. Next, the functional groups introduced via hydrolysis (-COOH) were ionized to impart a negative charge to the fiber surface and doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), an FDA approved anticancer drug, was ionized to impart a positive charge at a certain pH. The pH-sensitivity of both the materials was utilized to bind DOX electrostatically to the functionalized PCL fibers, with an aim to create pH-responsive drug delivery vehicle for the site-specific delivery of DOX. Results indicate successful electrostatic binding of DOX to functionalized electrospun PCL fibers and a high drug payload was achieved. The drug delivery response can be modulated by introduction of suitable stimuli (pH in this case) by utilization of a composite scaffold system comprising of drug-loaded scaffolds and hydrogels that release acid in the vicinity of scaffolds. Finally, polymer functionalization was used to obtain fibers with ion-exchange properties that could be used in environmental engineering as well as drug delivery applications. This study again emphasized the role of fiber diameter and surface area in enhancing the surface functionality of polymers. In summary, this research enabled us to gain a basic understanding of the functionalization process of electrospun fibers and how this functionalization process could be exploited to suit various end use applications. The current research established the fact that appropriately functionalized submicron to nanometer fibrous assemblies are promising candidates for next generation tissue-engineered 3D scaffolds/drug delivery vehicles. Location: Textiles Building 101E Contact: BMEBT Seminar Series Description: TOPIC: CARBON CAPTURE WITH LEWIS BASE DERIVATIZED METAL-ORGANIC FRAMEWORKS Abstract: The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently released its Fifth Assessment Report. The report states that human activity is extremely likely (95-100%) to have been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century. The results of this climate change will have impacts that include alteration of ecosystems, disruption of food production and water supply, damage to infrastructure and settlements, human morbidity and mortality and consequences for mental health and human well-being.One promising method to mitigate the impacts of greenhouse gas emission is Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS). An effective material for carbon capture must selectively bind carbon dioxide and not bind other gases that are present in the atmosphere and in waste streams. It must be easy to regenerate, requiring a small energy input to release the pure carbon dioxide so that it can be isolated from the environment. Research in our laboratory is focused on the development of Metal-Organic Frameworks, or MOFs, for this purpose. MOFs are crystalline, porous solids containing metal ions and organic linkers. The construction of these materials is similar to Tinker Toys on an atomic level, where metal ions function as spools and organic linkers function as rods. Our strategy involves the inclusion of electron donating sites within the pores of MOFs that will interact more strongly with carbon dioxide than with other molecules in air (e.g. oxygen and nitrogen). The seminar will explore the synthesis and structure of porous MOFs and Covalent Metal-Organic Networks (CMONs) with open electron donating sites. The gas sorption properties of the synthesized materials will be discussed, as well as strategies to improve their selectivity for carbon dioxide capture. Biosketch: Dr. Manke received his Bachelor's at Brandeis under Wenbin Lin (now at U of Chicago) who is one of the world's experts in MOFs, his Ph.D. under the MIT Professor of Energy, Daniel G. Nocera (now at Harvard) and performed Post-doctoral work at Cornell under Peter T. Wolczanski, working on carbon dioxide reduction. He has extensive experience in synthetic inorganic chemistry, particularly as it related to clean energy problems. Previous funding while at UMass Dartmouth includes two National Science Foundation grants and a grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention. « 2/18 - 3/3 »	Weaving with Light Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA Cost: Free Admission Contact: University Art Gallery Description: Weaving with Light CVPA Campus Gallery Reception: Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 pm with the artist talk at 5 pm UMass Dartmouth College of Visual & Performing Arts faculty and students are presenting their interactive Weaving with Light exhibition, recently showcased at the premier art fair SOFA CHICAGO through March 3, at the University's Campus Gallery. The installation pays tribute to the nearby city of New Bedford and its historical connection to the textile industry. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 p.m. with the artist talk at 5 pm at the gallery. The Weaving With Light exhibition was designed to be highly interactive, enticing visitors to participate in the actual production of cloth, drawing their attention to the making process used by contemporary fiber artists. Within the exhibition, several operational single-person looms are arranged in a semicircle accompanied by the vintage still photos of mill buildings, interiors, and workers to illustrate some of the actual operations and conditions of historic mill life. "Every step of the process has involved the discovery and problem solving aspects of design and making and realizing the full potential of the project through innovative methods, research and observation, material sourcing and testing, and overarching aesthetic decisions," Professor Hamlin said leading up to SOFA CHICAGO. "The students have extended themselves in both their intellectual and physical stamina." The warp yarns that feed each loom rise from the front of the loom to a rattle gathering at the top of the wall. The ascending yarns create the illusion of an enclosed space to emulate the conditions of mill life. Students and faculty traveled to Chicago this past November for the prestigious art exhibition dedicated to Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art (SOFA). Working on the Weaving with Light installation includes MFA Ceramics student Hanna Vogel, MFA Graphic Design student Kate Dickinson, MFA Wood/Furniture Design student John Middleton, MFA Digital Media student Alec Andersen, and BFA Textile Design/Fiber Arts students Tony Beal and Christopher Rogers. The group is being advised by Artisanry Professor James Lawton with assistance from Charlotte Hamlin, who serves as CVPA's coordinator for graduate studies and research, as well as CVPA Professional Technician Shingo Furukawa. UMass Dartmouth was one of six entries selected for prestigious university art exhibition in Chicago, including Illinois Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, San Diego State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Iowa. SOFA CHICAGO ranked #7 in the USA Today Reader's Choice 10 Best Art Events.
