Proactive bycatch avoidance systems: Development and evaluation with cooperative research
Sara Turner
MA Division of Marine Fisheries
Wednesday, September 27, 2017
3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
SMAST E, Room 101/102
836 South Rodney French Boulevard, New Bedford, MA
ABSTRACT:
Concern over incidental catches in commercial fisheries has been increasing, and substantial effort is being focused on developing effective reduction strategies. Incidental catches of alewife and blueback herring in the commercial Atlantic herring fishery have received substantial attention on the Northeast U.S. continental shelf, despite an existing bycatch avoidance program. Species distribution models were developed and evaluated with fishery-independent data, and then combined with oceanographic forecast models for evaluation of forecasting skill. Preliminary evaluations for fishery-dependent applications have been constructed using cooperative research. Early results indicate that species distribution forecasts have the potential to further reduce river herring incidental catches in the commercial Atlantic herring fishery.

Freshmen Zines Exhibit Reception
- Location: Claire T. Carney Library
, 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
- Contact: > See Description for contact information
- Description: Students in UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts' Visual Foundations Seminar are holding a reception for their exhibit of 20-30 handmade magazines, also known as zines, at the Claire T. Carney Library lobby on the UMass Dartmouth Campus, Thursday September 28 at 5-6pm. The zines reflect on the library's art and design resources through the eyes of small teams of freshmen art and design majors. This free public project will be on display September 28-October 18, 2017.
To find the exhibit, enter the main doors of the library and look for the lobby area on the first floor of the library, across from the elevators where the seating is located. The zines will focus on the resources available for each major in the visual arts: art education, art history, ceramics, digital media, drawing, film & media studies, fine arts, graphic design, illustration, jewelry/metals, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and textile design/fiber arts.
Zines are self-published, small-circulation, handmade papers or magazines. They often cover unconventional topics. Anyone can create a zine, and that's part of what makes them so awesome.

Joint Mechanical Engineering & Engineering Applied Sciences Seminar by Dr. Ting Tan
- Location: Textiles Building 101E
- Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
- Description: Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) and
Engineering and Applied Sciences (EAS) Seminar
DATE:
September 29, 2017
TIME:
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
LOCATION:
Textile Building, Room 101E
SPEAKER:
Dr. Ting Tan, Assistant Professor
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Vermont
TOPIC:
Sustainability in Beauty: An Extension of Civil Infrastructure Materials
ABSTRACT:
Adhesion is a critical property of asphalt and cementitious materials in civil engineering. Particle probe scanning force microscopes are created to study the aggregate-binder adhesion in asphalt pavements and steel-cement adhesion in concrete. Then, the Achilles heel of nacre and the functionally graded bamboo structures are studied to further understand these renowned prototypes for bio-inspiration. Finally, the restoration of a 15th century marble statue in New York Metropolitan Museum of Art is introduced to illustrate the role of science in the conservation of art structures.
BIO:
Dr. Ting Tan is an assistant professor at the University of Vermont. He was a post-doctoral research associate in the U.S. Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory between 2011 and 2012. He obtained his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University in 2011, and his MS and BS in Civil Engineering and Mechanics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2006 and 2003, respectively.
For more information please contact Dr. Jun Li, MNE Seminar Coordinator (jun.li@umassd.edu, 508-999-8692).
