  • BMEBT Seminar Presentation by Dr. Jens K. Plassmeier from MIT
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: BMEBT Seminar Series
  • Description: TOPIC: Synthetic Biology: An overview of the achievements and possibilities of an emerging field ABSTRACT: During the presentation the concept of Synthetic Biology will be introduced and a short history of this newer discipline will be presented. An overview of the possibilities of Synthetic Biology will be given along with an introduction of important terminology and the iGEM competition. The main part of the presentation will focus on examples that show the successful use of Synthetic Biology. These examples will include the use of synthetic circuits for different projects, the making of a synthetic genome, industrial applications, and interesting iGEM projects. The talk concludes with an outlook of the possibilities that Synthetic Biology holds. Brief Bio: Dr. Plassmeier is a Research Scientist in the Department of Biology at MIT with expertise in molecular genetics and synthetic biology. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Bielefeld in Germany under the tutelage of Professor Dr. Albert Puehler, where he studied regulation of propionate metabolism in the industrially useful microorganism, Corynebacterium glutamicum. Dr. Plassmeiers current projects consist of constructing a minimal genome organism using cutting-edge synthetic biology tools. He serves as coordinator for this project and is examining the production of amino acids, biofuels, biopolymers, and other value added products. In addition to supervising day-to-day research laboratory activities, he has served as a consultant for two up-and-coming biotechnology companies in the Cambridge, MA area and most recently served as a judge for the 2014 iGEM competition, held in Boston, MA.

  • Emerging Young Artists 2015 Invitational Exhibition
  • Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: UMass Dartmouth's College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) presents the Emerging Young Artists 2015 Invitational Exhibition at the Campus Gallery, located on the main campus of UMass Dartmouth, through February 7, 2015. UMass Dartmouth's CVPA is thrilled to host this third annual high school invitational exhibition to showcase the work of many of the region's talented art students. Students from more than 25 Massachusetts high schools were invited to be part of the exhibition. Schools were chosen based on their long-term commitment to art education and for the quality of work that comes from their art programs. The art teachers from these high schools were asked to select artwork in any media (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, film, video, printmaking, graphic design etc.) from their best students to be included in this group exhibition. The result is a marvelous exhibit that showcases the talents of these young artists. More than 100 works is on display. An opening reception for the exhibiting young artists, their art teachers, the UMass Dartmouth community, and the general public will be held on Saturday, February 7, at 2 p.m., with an awards presentation at 3:30 p.m., at the Gallery.
