  • Description: TITLE: ON THE REDUCED COLLOCATION METHOD FOR NON-LINEAR STEADY-STATE PDEs AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC FLOWS abstract: Reduced basis methods are a class of numerical methods developed for settings which require a large number of solutions to a parameterized problem. In this work, we consider settings which require many queries to a numerical solver for a parameterized steady-state partial differential equation. We adapt an existing method for linear steady-state problems, the reduced collocation method, to the non-linear case. Furthermore, a class of 2-D non-linear hyperbolic PDEs for pedestrian traffic flow is considered. An appropriate numerical solver is furnished using weighted essentially non-oscillatory finite difference in space, and a strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta method in time. Several models in this class are approached, one extended with a novel non-local path-planning formulation. Some of these models have physical parameters that are difficult to measure directly. This yields a parameter estimation problem on the steady-state solution. The resulting PDE constrained optimal control problem, requiring many queries to the solver, is accelerated with the reduced collocation method.

About the performers: Kwabena Boateng is a dancer, dramatist, and musician who has toured the world extensively, recorded, given master classes, and appeared in films about African Culture. He was a founding member of the African jazz-highlife ensemble Talking Drums . An authority on African dance, language, culture, and drama, Kwabena continues to perform, direct, consult, and lead dance groups throughout the United States both individually and with Talking Drums . Attah Poku is an internationally renowned master drummer, scholar, teacher and performer, who teaches in the World Music Programs at Tufts University in Medford MA, and Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Ryan Loud is an alumnus of UMassD’s music program and is an accomplished professional classical percussionist, Afro Cuban drummer, vibraphonist, and drum set artist. Logan Amaral is a recent graduate of UMassD’s music program and is an accomplished drummer, tabla performer and percussionist who has gained fluency in a diversity of global styles. He is completing his Master’s Degree at Tufts University, speaks Twi, and has done intensive research on Asante drumming. About African music: We will be performing the traditional instrumental music, dance, and song of the coastal rainforest cultures of West Africa, including peoples from the present day countries of Ghana and Togo. The dance drama, which includes the three dimensions of instrumental music, dance, and song, is an expression of events in the life-, agricultural-, and seasonal cycles. It connects people as members of a community and strategizes for success in the individual and collective struggle for survival - the transcendence of physical, economic, and political limitations. Drumming, dance, and song are highly sophisticated, complex, and powerful means in oral tradition by which people remember genealogies, recall group history, and maintain personal connections with each other, ancestors, a spiritual realm, and the creator. The historic global movement of African peoples since the 1500s has brought this African sense of community, transcendence, and spirit to many parts of the globe, resulting in new forms of expression shared by people of all cultural backgrounds. These include Blues, Shouts, Clapping Plays such as Pattin’ Juba, Gospel, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Rumba, Samba, Candomble, Lucumi , Vodun, and numerous other styles, including much of the world’s popular music since the dawn of the 20th century. The music and dance of Africa is an ancient and contemporary expression that is a humanizing force in our paths through life. • RESEARCH COMPONENT OF PHD QUALIFIER EXAM BY: MD Nashid Anjum
  • Location: Science & Engineering Building, Lester W. Cory Conference Room: Room 213A

  • Contact: ECE: Electrical & Computer Engineering Department
  • Description: TOPIC: Co-Existence in Millimeter-Wave Wireless Body Area Network LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 213A ABSTRACT: A WBAN consists of few wearable sensors attached to body parts, clothes, implanted underneath the skins or inner body. A WBAN consists of a central hub (i.e., base station) that controls and communicates with sensors. WBANs may deeply overlap on each other in a crowded area such as hospital because of their rapid mobility, small network size, flexible topology, and higher network density. This overlapping may raise severe interference issues. In case of deeply overlapping WBANs, interference avoidance employing power control schemes is plausibly unrealistic, because, nodes and hub from other network may stay much closer than nodes and hub of its own network. In this research work, we formulate the WBAN self-coexistence problem as a linear integer programming optimization problem considering service priorities and user demands and propose a solution named Fair Frame Distribution for Self-coexistence (FDS). Further, I found that 60 GHz based communication is probably the best fit for WBAN compared to the traditional 2.4 GHz based communication considering its quality of compact network coverage, device miniaturization, efficient frequency reuse, multi-gigabyte transmission rate, and the therapeutic merits for human health. The efficiency of the mmWave based WBAN can be improved by allowing coexistence i.e., mitigating interference among the WBANs. We formulate the coexistence problem as non-cooperative, distributed power control game. The existence of Nash equilibrium is proved and the efficiency of the Nash equilibrium is improved by modifying the utility function and introducing a linear and an exponential pricing factor. Simulation result shows the proposed pricing policy significantly improves the efficiency of the optimal solution with respect to Pareto optimality and social optimality. To introduce different service priority levels such as delay sensitivity this research work utilizes the concept of discount factor employing repeated game. Though both of pricing and repeated game significantly improve the efficiency of the optimal equilibrium. This research work employed Nash bargaining solution to improve fairness of the optimal equilibrium. Extensive simulation result shows that Nash bargaining solution significantly improves the equilibrium efficiency and fairness. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. Open to the public. • Description: Mechanical Engineering MS PROJECT PRESENTATION by Mr. Peter B. Khoury DATE: December 9, 2016 TIME: 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. LOCATION: Textile Building, Room 101E TOPIC: Investigating the Computational Efficiency of a Non-Hydrostatic Ocean Model on the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center ABSTRACT: Scientists today use computer models to study oceanic variability. The majority of these models are still unable to capture all of the complex physical interactions that exist in the ocean. Improving the computational speed of these models remains a high priority. In this project, we use a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic ocean model which evolves momentum, temperature, and salinity in time. We explore the model performance for different grid sizes and compile-time options on the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center. For smaller grid sizes we find serial computations (no OpenMP) faster than parallel computations with optimization level O3 for the Intel fortran compiler. Changing the optimization level to O2 gives superior performance for parallel compared to serial computations. For larger grid sizes however, there is no clear preference for serial or parallel. Amongst the serial runs, we find that increasing the number of threads from 4 to 10 improves the efficiency of the code regardless of the grid size. On the other hand, the parallel runs yield similar performance for both 4 and 10 threads. For smaller grids using 10 threads gave a better performance for parallel runs with optimization level O2 for the Intel fortran compiler. For larger grids, there was no trend with respect to the number of threads affecting the code efficiency. For the optimization level O3, both 4 and 10 threads resulted in almost similar performance regardless of the grid size.
