Abstract:
A high-resolution (up to 2 km), unstructured-grid, fully coupled Arctic sea ice-ocean Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (AO-FVCOM) was developed to simulate the seasonal and interannual variability of current and sea ice in the pan-Arctic region over the period 1978-2014. The study is focused on the variability of current circulation and volume transport through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) and their relationship to basin-local atmospheric forcings of sea level pressure and wind. The comparisons were made between the outflow transports through the CAA simulated by the AO-FVCOM and the volume transport estimated from moored measurements. The dominant physical dynamics controlling the CAA outflow flux were examined. In addition, the study is to assess the simulated Arctic sea ice through the validations with four sea ice characteristics of extent, concentration, drift velocity and thickness and the efforts were also made to examine the sensitivities of the model-produced bias. The simulated seasonal and interannual variabilities of sea ice extent, concentration, drift velocity and thickness were compared with the observed data and other six numerical models. The experiments were also made to discuss the physical mechanisms which affected the simulated sea ice significantly.
