  • Description: TOPIC: SYSTEM RELIABILITY CONSIDERTING PROBABILISTTIC FAILURE ISOLATION AND RANDOM PROPAGATION TIME LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: Many real-world systems exhibit functional dependence behavior that can cause competitions in the time domain between probabilistic failure isolation and failure propagation effects. Existing works addressing such competing effects have assumed that any failure propagation originating from a system component instantaneously takes effect, which is often not true in practical scenarios. In this thesis, we propose a combinatorial method for addressing random propagation time in the reliability analysis of complex systems subject to competing probabilistic failure isolation and failure propagation effects. The suggested methodology, based on event trees and applied probability, is applicable to arbitrary types of time-to-failure distributions for system components. A case study of reliability analysis of an example smart home sensor system is provided to demonstrate the proposed methodology. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. Open to the public. • Description: TOPIC: IMPERFECT COVERAGE ANALYSIS FOR CLOUD-RAID SYSTEMS LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: Cloud storage is a data storage model where a network of heterogeneous servers is accessible through the Internet for storing, managing and processing data. Cloud users expect to be able to access their data from anywhere at any time without interruption or failure. To achieve high data availability and reliability, Cloud-RAIDs (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) based on various data redundancy techniques are one of the effective solutions. Existing works on reliability modeling of the cloud-RAID systems have assumed perfect fault detection and recovery mechanisms, which is often not true in practice. In this thesis, we relax this assumption by presenting combinatorial approaches based on binary decision diagrams for reliability analysis of cloud-RAID 5 and cloud-RAID 6 systems subject to imperfect fault coverage. Both element level coverage and fault level coverage are addressed. Numerical example results are provided to illustrate effects of the two types of imperfect fault coverage on reliability performance of cloud storage systems.
