Online Teaching and Learning Strategies

- Description: In this course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for online teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching strategies for the online environment.
Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop your own strategies for online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMassD.
The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing, and building the online course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to techniques that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and increase retention.

Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition & Collaborative Aggregates Art Scholarship Exhibition

- Description: An exhibition of Fine Arts faculty at the College of Visual and Performing Arts presents recent faculty work in Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Mixed-Media at the UMass Dartmouth CVPA Campus Gallery from November 8 through December 12, 2016.
Also on display will be the Collaborative Aggregates Art Scholarship Exhibition. Collaborative Aggregates has awarded six $1,500 scholarships to students in the Department of Fine Arts enrolled in the graduate or undergraduate program: Henry Carpio, April Claggett, Devin Kish, Andrew Laverty, Allen TenBusschen, and Erin Wheary. Works by each scholarship winner will be included in the Collaborate Aggregates annual calendar and are also presented in this exhibition.
The mission of the Department of Fine Arts is to maintain an environment where artists are committed to the pursuit of teaching, research, and creative work. This faculty of professional artists provides a high-quality cross-disciplinary studio education to students at the foundation, undergraduate, and graduate levels through formal, aesthetic, technical, and intellectual training. Faculty members prepare students to become creative artists, pursue graduate study, or engage in Fine Arts-related professions through the attainment of their BFA and MFA degrees.
The closing reception will be held on Monday, December 12th, from 4 pm to 6 pm with artist talks at 5 pm.

Gaspar, hosted by POR 217, a course in Portuguese-American Literature, and sponsored by the UMass Dartmouth Department of Portuguese and Tagus Press in the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture.
Our invited guest will read from his poems and discuss his work with students and faculty.

TOPIC:
Quantitative Engineering Sustainability: Handshake of Mechanistic Models and Life Cycle Footprint
ABSTRACT:
The sustainable development of our nation's transportation infrastructure requires quantitative tools to translate pavements condition and design into lifecycle energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Recent developments in mechanistic pavement-vehicle interaction (PVI) models aim at providing such engineering estimates. I will discuss an integrated framework that involves models that range from material scale to structural scale all the way up to network scale to characterize the performance of pavement infrastructures. While the mechanics-based models within this framework establish the link between material characteristics and structural scale performance, the scale-up to network level estimates is accomplished using big data. I will also discuss the impact of aging in the form of evolution of material properties over time due to shrinkage, alkali silica reactions and other environmental stressors on durability and ultimately the life cycle environmental footprint of pavement infrastructure.
BIO:
Dr. Arghavan Louhghalam joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as an assistant professor in 2016. Prior to joining the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, she was a postdoctoral research associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub@MIT). She holds a Ph.D. and a M.S. in Engineering Mechanics from the Johns Hopkins University, a M.S. in Earthquake Engineering from University of Tehran, and a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology, Iran. Dr. Louhghalam's research interests are mainly focused on interconnected areas of solid mechanics, material modeling and applied statistics with applications to the development of sustainable and resilient civil infrastructure.

Recording with Techsmith Relay

- Description: Techsmith Relay is a software based lecture capture and personal recording solution. Relay can record PowerPoint presentations or any other content displayed on your computer screen, in addition to audio narration and web cam video. You can record anywhere, anytime regardless of internet connectivity or location. After recording, the video is automatically processed by the Relay server and uploaded to a cloud based storage provider. This workshop will walk through the process of installing Relay, recording and linking to the video from myCourses. Please bring your own laptop if you would like to participate in this Workshop.
