  • Annu Palakunnathu Matthew: An Indian from India
  • Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Cost: Free admission
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: University Art Gallery, UMass Dartmouth, New Bedford presents Annu Palakunnathu Matthew: An Indian from India Curated by Viera Levitt Exhibition Dates: Nov 13, 2014 - Jan 25, 2015 Reception: AHA! Night, Thursday Nov 13, 6-9 pm, Artist Talk 7 pm Photo Booth: AHA! Night, Thursday December 11, 6-8 pm The University Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo show by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, American artist born in England and raised in India. The exhibition will take place at UMass Dartmouth's New Bedford campus between November 13 and January 25, 2015 . Annu Palakunnathu Matthew's work explores and challenges our perception of identity, photography and memory. She enlivens old black and white, or sepia toned photos through a surprising and skillful technique of digital manipulation that preserves the background while adding figures of herself or others. With this body of work, Ms. Matthew challenges our perceptions of time and collective memory, while also asking us to look with new eyes at the much cherished family photograph, especially those that were perhaps brought to this country by our immigrant grandparents. Additionally, by replacing static images with animations that are displayed on iPads and inserted into an old book or picture frames, Matthew adds surprise, an inverted dimension of time and contemporary interpretation into a traditional form of media. As part of our commitment to community engagement, we will have a photo booth taking professional photographs of any three generations of woman from the same immigrant family during AHA! Night on Thursday , December 11 from 6 to 8 pm . Through these portraits, the artist wants to create work that both depict the changing face of American immigration and also chronicles the continual renewal of American diversity. The visitors can bring the whole family and get a print to take home. Learn more at tinyurl.com/immigrantphoto . Reception: AHA! Night, Thursday Nov 13 , 6-9 pm, Artist Talk 7 pm Photo Booth: AHA! • MASTER OF SCIENCE PROJECT DEFENSE BY: Tahera Begum Shaik
  • Location: Science and Engineering Building , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Cost: free
  • Contact: ECE: Electrical & Computer Engineering Department
  • Description: TOPIC: QUALITY MODELING OF COMPRESSED IMAGES AND ITS APPLICATIONS IN WIRELESS NETWORKS LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: This project intends to create No-Reference (NR) quality estimations for JPEG compressed images. Tuning a NR estimation model towards PSNR may not be suitable in summarizing NR quality measurements. This project investigated a computational and memory proficient NR quality evaluation model for JPEG compressed images; and examined subjective test outcomes to refine the model. A short survey on existing models are presented at the beginning. An experimental approach was applied to improve identified weaknesses for one of compared models. The second part of the project provides a sophisticated and verified model by considering a group of images. Besides, the project studies the quality performance estimation for image transmissions over wireless networks, and establishes the relationship between the bit error rate and (Peak signal-to-noise ratio) PSNR. The project concludes that the model for NR image quality is feasible in wireless network applications. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. Open to the public. Advisor: Dr. Honggang Wang Committee Members: Dr. Liudong Xing, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Dr. Xiaoqin "Shelley" Zhang, Department of Computer and Information Science
