  • Getting Started in myCourses
  • Location: Claire T. Carney Library, Room 226 , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: CITS Instructional Development
  • Description: This face-to-face workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the teaching and learning features of (myCourses) Blackboard Learn. You will learn about the roles an instructor plays in the online environment and identify key attributes for success. From there, you will learn how to set up the Course Menu, your students' access point to tools and content, and how to create Content Areas that contain materials, tools, and resources. You will have the opportunity to add a course structure to your development course, allowing you to learn about Blackboard Learn tools and features as you experience them in the course environment. You will become familiar with some common start-up tasks, such as creating announcements, adding a syllabus, adding calendar entries, and setting up assignments Finally, you will view the course as a student to become familiar with how the course environment appears to your own students. As a student, you will learn how to access and navigate through tools and content.

  • Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) and Engineering Applied Science (EAS) Seminar, 4/1/16
  • Location: Textiles Building 105
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) and Engineering Applied Science (EAS) Seminar Friday, April 1st 2016 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. LOCATION: Textile Building, Room 105A SPEAKER: Dr. Amir Taghavy, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at UMass Dartmouth TOPIC: Nanoparticles: Fate and Transport in the Subsurface ABSTRACT: With an estimated global market value exceeding US$25 billion per annum and use in a wide variety of industrial processes and household products, nano-scale materials have also found application in subsurface engineering problems. Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) can serve as environmental agents for subsurface remediation (e.g., zero-valent-iron NPs), or on the contrary, can pose a threat to the environment (e.g., silver NPs). Extensive research is also in progress on the utility of nanoparticles in a range of petroleum engineering applications, such as acoustic and electromagnetic imaging/mapping techniques (contrast agents), nano-sensor technologies, enhanced oil recovery, and so on. Understanding the reactive transport characteristics of NPs in natural soils and rock systems is essential to having an effective design of the engineering and/or remedial schemes, or revealing their potential impact on the terrestrial ecosystems and groundwater quality. This presentation briefly describes, (i) the underlying processes that govern the retention and transport of NPs in porous media, (ii) the numerical methods used to simulate these processes, (iii) a few modeling examples, based on core-scale observations, of NP interactions with solid phase collector surfaces, co-existing dissolved compounds and other NPs, and (iv) the implementation of core-scale experimental data on the mobility of silica NPs (nSiO2) and the generation/coalescence of nSiO2-stabilized CO2-in-brine foams to make field-scale predictions of foam viscosification-induced enhancement of macroscopic sweep efficiency near the injection wells. SHORT BIO: Amir Taghavy joined Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in September 2015. A civil engineer by training and an environmental hydrogeologist, Amir received his PhD in the Environmental Water Resources Engineering from Tufts University (Medford, MA) in 2013 where he built his research profile as a modeler in the field of flow and reactive transport in porous media, with focus on the fate and transport of nanoparticles in aquatic-terrestrial systems. His next appointment was at the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin where as a postdoctoral research fellow, his research centered on the upscaling of nanotechnology-based solutions for subsurface engineering problems including the enhanced oil recovery and CO2 flood conformance. For more information please contact Dr. Mehdi Raessi, MNE Seminar Coordinator (mraessi@umassd.edu, 508-999-8496) Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome! First year MNE students are REQUIRED to attend! All other MNE students are encouraged to attend (especially Juniors and Seniors). EAS students are encouraged to attend. Thank you, Sue Cunha, Administrative Assistant for MNE 508-999-8492 scunha@umassd.edu

  • BMEBT Seminar by David Glass, Office of Technology Commercialization & Ventures
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: BMEBT Seminar Series
  • Description: TITLE: PATENTS AND TECHNOLOGY TRASFER: INTRODUCTION TO ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROGRAMS FOR PATENTING AND PURSUING COMMERCIAL AND SOCIETAL BENEFITS FROM ACADEMIC RESEARCH Abstract: This talk will provide a general introduction to patents and technology transfer as they are practiced at UMass and other academic institutions. Some basic information about patents and patent law will be presented, including discussion of the types of inventions arising from academic research that might be patentable, what the requirements for patentability are, and how the patent process works. Patent programs will be discussed in the context of universities and other non-profit institutions, which have established programs and policies to identify patentable inventions and other research results having commercial value, and have created technology transfer offices to exploit such developments by identifying or creating companies to whom inventions would be licensed, to enable the commercialization of beneficial products. Brief bio: David Glass serves as a consultant directing the activities of the Office of Technology Commercialization and Ventures at UMass Dartmouth. He has over twenty years experience working in technology transfer, the process of identifying and protecting inventions arising from academic research and licensing the inventions to companies for the development of beneficial products. Prior to UMass Dartmouth, he spent ten years as associate director of technology transfer at Mass. General Hospital, and a subsequent ten years as a consultant, splitting his time directing tech transfer at McLean Hospital, Joslin Diabetes Center, and Baystate Medical Center, while also consulting for the UMass President's Office and other universities, hospitals, and small biotech companies on matters relating to patent, licensing, and academic-industry relations. Dr. Glass has worked at UMass Dartmouth since August 2014. In addition to his work at UMass, he also consults for renewable fuel and industrial biotechnology firms in several fields including government regulatory affairs. Dr. Glass holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in biochemical sciences from Princeton University.
