  • Department of Fisheries Oceanography / SMAST seminar - September 20, 2017 - Min-Yang Lee
  • Location: > See description for location

  • Description: Department of Fisheries Oceanography Fishery Management, Prices, and Revenues in the Atlantic Sea Scallop IFQ Fishery Min-Yang Lee Northeast Fisheries Science Center Wednesday, September 20, 2017 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm SMAST E, Room 101/102 836 South Rodney French Boulevard, New Bedford, MA Individual Fishing Quotas (IFQs) are generally thought to increase ex-vessel prices, largely by ending the “race to fish.” The Atlantic Sea Scallop fishery implemented an IFQ in 2010 for a small portion of the fishery. Prior to the IFQ program, the General Category (GC) fleet received slightly higher prices than the Limited Access (LA) fleet. During the transitional phase-in to the IFQ program, the IFQ fleet received moderately lower prices. After the IFQ program was implemented, the IFQ fleet received prices that were approximately fifty cents higher per pound. We use econometric methods from the policy analysis literature to examine the effects of the IFQ program on prices and ex-vessel value. Our findings suggest many small changes combined to produce this effect. We find that the GC vessels received higher prices for large scallops compared to the LA vessels; this premia turned into a discount during the transition period, and partially re-emerged during the IFQ regime. Second, we find that the IFQ fishery shifted its output mix slightly towards larger sized scallops. Finally, the simple law of demand explains a portion of the outcome for the IFQ fishery: market prices are lower on days with high landings. • Description: Topic: Cloud Based Wireless Health and Its Application of Sleep Monitoring Location: College of Engineering Conference Room, Textiles Building (TXT), Room 101E Abstract: In this project, I developed a system combining Internet of Things (IOT) devices and cloud that can help us to achieve a sustainable ECG monitoring. The project also applied some techniques such as data analytics, noise reduction and feature extraction to processing ECG signal with the power of parallel processing in cloud environment. In addition, I also focus on detecting sleep behavior using video processing techniques. The sleep monitoring system could help find the pattern of people's sleep behavior and could provide some health suggestions. Sleep monitoring using video processing along with wireless sensors such as for ECG sensors can also reduce the overall system cost and help the detection of life threatening events during sleep. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed system are also demonstrated. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. All interested parties are invited to attend. • Description: THERMOACOUSTIC ENGINES & REFRIGERATION by Steven L. Garrett (CCB-247) Abstract: The generation of sound by heat has been documented as an acoustical curiosity since a Buddhist monk reported the loud tone generated by a ceremonial rice-cooker in his diary, in 1568. The first qualitative explanation of such phenomena was provided by Lord Rayleigh in 1878: If heat be given to the air at the moment of greatest condensation or be taken from it at the moment of greatest rarefaction, the vibration is encouraged. It was not until the work of Nikolas Rott and his collaborators, in the 1970's that a hydrodynamic theory was created and the term thermoacoustics was introduced. In the early 1980's, it was shown that the opposite effect was also possible: high-amplitude sound waves could produce useful amounts of refrigeration. This presentation will introduce the fundamentals of thermoacoustic heat transfer and will describe several thermoacoustic engines that were created to generate high-amplitude sound from a variety of heat sources (e.g., waste heat, solar energy, and nuclear fission) as well as several thermoacoustic refrigerators that include an electronics cooler flown on the Space Shuttle Discovery, a chiller that cooled two racks of radar electronics on a US Navy warship, and a sales cabinet for Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Development of these devices created new challenges related to the design of heat exchangers for acoustically-oscillatory gas flows and high-powered electrodynamic sound sources capable of producing several kilowatts of acoustic power at electroacoustic efficiencies as high as 90%. To date, no thermoacoustic engine or refrigerator is being produced commercially but research to improve our understanding of these processes is ongoing.
